Description

A VEHICLE FLOOR ASSEMBLY
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present disclosure relates to a vehicle floor assembly and a vehicle.
BACKGROUND
Seats are an essential comfort feature of a vehicle. Conventional vehicle seats are mounted on metal rails that are fixed directly to the vehicle structure with mechanical fixings. The seats slide longitudinally, in line with the direction of car travel, to accommodate different height occupants whilst still maintaining the proximity to the driving controls.
There is a desire to increase the flexibility of vehicle seats by providing them with increased functionality and range of movement, as well as making occupant ingress and egress easier. Furthermore, the continuing development of autonomous vehicles may eventually lead to a 'self-driving' vehicle, thereby releasing the occupant to carry out other tasks. This may involve providing the seats with the ability to swivel so that the driver and/or other occupants of the vehicle need not always face the direction of travel but can turn in order to face a different direction, such as other vehicle occupants.
It will be appreciated that the space within a vehicle is at a premium so it is difficult to provide the seats with an increased range of movement and/or a swivel function whilst at the same time maintaining comfort for the occupants.
It is an aim of the present invention to address one or more of the disadvantages associated
with the prior art.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Aspects and embodiments of the invention provide a vehicle floor assembly and a vehicle as claimed in the appended claims.
According to an aspect of the present invention there is provided a vehicle floor assembly comprising a seat platform configured to slideably support a seat frame, the seat platform being mounted to a floor assembly of the vehicle such that the seat frame supported by the seat platform is slideable in a direction between a front and a rear of the vehicle that extends at an oblique angle to a longitudinal medial plane of the vehicle.
By configuring the seat platform such that the seat frame is slideable in a direction between the front and the rear of the vehicle that extends at an angle to the longitudinal medial plane of the vehicle, the occupants may move their seat into a position to ingress or egress the vehicle more easily, or in which they have more space to allow them to enable the occupant to swivel their seat into an orientation in which they are facing a direction other than the direction of travel.
In an embodiment, the seat platform may be configured such that the seat frame is slideable, in use, such that the seat frame moves away from the longitudinal medial plane as it slides from the front towards the rear of the vehicle.
In another embodiment, the seat platform may be configured such that the seat frame is slideable, in use, such that the seat frame moves toward the longitudinal medial plane as it slides from the front towards the rear of the vehicle.
Optionally, the vehicle may comprise a plurality of vehicle seat platforms. Each vehicle seat platform may be mounted to the floor assembly such that the seat frame supported by each vehicle seat platform is slideable, in use, in a direction that extends at an oblique angle to the longitudinal medial plane between the front and rear of the vehicle.
In an embodiment, the vehicle may comprise a first pair of vehicle seat platforms positioned in side-by-side relation, in use on opposite sides of the longitudinal medial plane. Each of the vehicle seat platforms of the first pair may be mounted to the floor assembly such that the seat frame supported by each vehicle seat platform moves, in use, in a direction away from the longitudinal medial plane as it slides from the front towards the rear of the vehicle.
Optionally, the vehicle may comprise a second pair of vehicle seat platforms positioned in side-by-side relation, in use on opposite sides of the longitudinal medial plane, each of said vehicle seat platforms of the second pair being mounted to the floor assembly such that the seat frame supported by each vehicle seat platform moves, in use, in a direction towards the longitudinal medial plane as it slides in a direction from a front towards a rear of the vehicle.
In embodiments, the vehicle seat platforms of the first pair may each slideably support a front seat frame of the floor assembly, and the vehicle seat platforms of the second pair may each slideably support a rear seat frame of the floor assembly.
In embodiments, the or each vehicle seat platform may be arranged such that the seat frame supported by the seat support platform, in use, moves away from the longitudinal medial plane at a first end of travel thereof proximate to a door of the vehicle.
In embodiments, the or each vehicle seat platform may be arranged such that the seat frame supported by the seat support platform, in use, moves towards the longitudinal medial plane at a second end of travel thereof distal from a door of the vehicle.
Each vehicle seat platform may comprise a floor component forming or supporting a part of the cabin floor of the vehicle.
The floor component may comprise a plurality of parallel elements. The elements are spaced to provide a plurality of parallel slots. The parallel slots can extend at an oblique angle to a longitudinal medial plane.
The slots may be configured to permit support struts of a seat frame mounting member to extend through the slots and enable the seat frame mounting member to slide in a direction along the slots.
In embodiments, the or each vehicle seat platform may comprise a carriage mounting means configured to slideably mount a carriage beneath the floor component such that the support struts of a seat frame mounting member extending through the slots engage with the carriage.
The carriage mounting means may be configured to permit the carriage to slide in a direction parallel to the slots and, in use, at an oblique angle to the longitudinal medial plane.
Optionally, the or each vehicle seat platform may be mounted such that an upper surface of the floor component of the or each vehicle seat platform lies flush with an upper surface of the cabin floor.
A seat frame mounting member may be slideably mounted to the or each vehicle seat platform.
In some embodiments, the seat frame mounting member may comprise a base comprising pedestal mounting means configured to permit a seat frame pedestal to be mounted to the base such that the pedestal can swivel relative to the base.
A seat frame pedestal may be mounted to the base. Optionally, a seat frame is mounted to the pedestal.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a vehicle comprising a floor assembly as described above.
Within the scope of this application it is expressly intended that the various aspects, embodiments, examples and alternatives set out in the preceding paragraphs, in the claims and/or in the following description and drawings, and in particular the individual features thereof, may be taken independently or in any combination. That is, all embodiments and/or features of any embodiment can be combined in any way and/or combination, unless such features are incompatible. The applicant reserves the right to change any originally filed claim or file any new claim accordingly, including the right to amend any originally filed claim to depend from and/or incorporate any feature of any other claim although not originally claimed in that manner.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
A vehicle in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention is described herein with reference to the accompanying Figures.
With reference to Figure 1, there is shown a vehicle seat support assembly 1 that includes a seat support platform 2 which provides a floor component forming part of a cabin floor 3a (Figure 7) of a vehicle 4, or which at least supports part of the cabin floor 3a of a vehicle 4, and to which a seat frame mounting member in the form of a base 5 is slideably mounted.
The floor component may be formed from a plurality of spaced parallel structural elements 20.
The base 5 has struts 6 that extend through slots 7 in the platform 2 between the elements 20 and which attach to a carriage 8. The carriage 8 is slideably mounted beneath the seat support platform 2 on carriage mounting means comprising shafts 8a along which the carriage 8 can run on linear bearings 8b, so that the base 5 and the carriage 8 can slide together in a direction extending along the length of the slots 7.
A seat frame pedestal 9 is mountable to the base 5, and a seat frame 10 is mountable to the pedestal 9. The base 5 may include seat frame mounting means 11 that permits the pedestal 9 and seat frame 10 to be attached to the base 5 via a seat frame swivel mechanism 12 (see Figure 3). The seat frame swivel mechanism 12 may comprise a drivetrain configured so that upon activation of a drive motor 13 by an occupant of the seat frame 10, the drivetrain rotates to cause the seat frame 10 to swivel. In an alternate embodiment, the seat frame 10 is directly attached to the base 5 so that it cannot swivel.
The seat frame swivel mechanism 12 may also be configured to permit the height of the seat frame 10 and pedestal 9 to be adjusted.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figure 3, the seat frame swivel mechanism 12 comprises a seat frame swivel gear 14, to which the seat frame 10 is attached, and a pinion gear 15 in meshing engagement with the seat frame swivel gear 14. The pinion gear 15 has a drive shaft 16 which is attached to the drive motor 13 so that, upon activation of the motor 13, the pinion gear rotates which in turn drives the seat frame swivel gear 14 to rotate the pedestal 9 and the seat frame 10.
A seat frame support shaft 17 extends along the axis of rotation of the seat frame swivel gear 14 and the pedestal 9 is mounted to an upper end of the seat frame support shaft 17. An air spring 18 may be located between the seat frame support shaft 17 and the pedestal 9.
A front perspective view of a vehicle 4 according to the embodiments of the invention is shown in Figure 4. Front and top plan views of the vehicle are also shown in Figures 5 and 6. Marked on Figures 5 and 6 are lines representing the medial longitudinal plane M, which is a plane that extends down the middle of the vehicle and splits or divides the vehicle 4 in half from front to back. The arrow marked "F" shown on Figures 4 to 6 represents a direction towards the front of the vehicle 4, whereas arrow marked "R" represents a direction towards the rear of the vehicle 4.
Figure 7 shows a plan view of a floor assembly 3 of the vehicle of Figures 4 to 6. In the illustrated embodiment, four seat support platforms 2 have been mounted, or form part of, the floor assembly 3. More specifically, Figure 7 shows that two pairs of seat platforms 2a, 2b have been mounted to the floor assembly 3 of the vehicle 4 with one pair 2a, 2b behind the other and the seat platforms 2a, 2b of each pair being positioned in side-by-side relation on opposite sides of the medial longitudinal plane M. One pair 2a are the platforms 2 for the front seats of the vehicle 4 whilst the other pair 2b are the platforms 2 for the rear seats of the vehicle 4.
Each of the seat platforms 2 have been mounted to the floor assembly 3 so that a seat frame 10 supported by a seat platform 2 will slide in a direction between a front F and a rear R of the vehicle 4 but at an angle, rather than parallel, to the longitudinal medial plane M of the vehicle 4.
Whilst Figure 7 shows that all four seat support platforms 2 have been mounted so that they extend at an angle to the longitudinal medial plane M of the vehicle 4, it will be appreciated that only one or more of the seat support platforms 2 may extend in this way. For example, at least one seat platform 2 may be configured so that the seat frame 10 slideably mounted to that seat platform 2 moves in a direction away from the longitudinal medial plane M as it slides in a direction from the front F towards the rear R of the vehicle 4. Alternatively, at least one seat platform 2 may be configured such that the seat frame 10 slideably mounted to that seat platform 2 moves in a direction toward the longitudinal medial plane M as it slides from the front F towards the rear R of the vehicle 4.
If the seat platforms are in a pair, i.e. a front pair 2a and a rear pair 2b, the seat platforms of each pair can be arranged so that both the seat frames 10 of that pair are both slideable in a direction away, or towards, the longitudinal medial plane as they slide from the front F towards the rear R of the vehicle 4.
In the particular arrangement shown in Figure 7, the pair of seat support platforms 2a that support the seat frames 10 of the front seats of the vehicle 4 are arranged so that the seat frames 10 supported by each of the support platforms both move away from the longitudinal medial plane, and so away from each other, as the seat frames 10 slide along the platforms 2 in a direction from the front F towards the rear R of the vehicle 4.
Additionally, the pair of seat platforms 2b providing the rear seats of the vehicle 4 are arranged so that the seat frames 10 supported by each of the support platforms 2 both move towards the longitudinal medial plane M, as so move closer to each other, as the seat frames 10 slide along the platforms 2 from the front F towards the rear R of the vehicle 4.
The arrangement of seat support platforms 2, as shown in Figure 7, most closely resembles the shape of a rhombus or diamond. The benefit of this arrangement is that the support platforms 2 are arranged such that their respective seat frames 10 are moved away from the longitudinal medial plane M at a first end of travel thereof proximate to a door 40 (Figures 4 and 6) of the vehicle 4 to facilitate ingress and egress of occupants, and it also enables a seat frame 10 to be moved into an area of more space which is particularly desirable if the seat frames 10 are designed to swivel, as additional leg room for the occupant is required.
Furthermore, the support platforms 2 are further arranged such that their respective seat frames 10 are moved towards the longitudinal medial plane M at a second end of travel thereof distal from said door 40 of the vehicle 4, thereby permitting said seat frame 10 to travel inwardly of a wheel arch (not shown) of the vehicle 4. Advantageously, this enables the seat frame to travel further forward or rearward within the vehicle than would otherwise be possible with conventional seat movement parallel to the longitudinal medial plane M. In particular, this enables the seat frame 10 and/or the legs of the occupant to fit between wheel arches of the vehicle.
It will be appreciated that various changes and modifications can be made to the present invention without departing from the scope of the present application.
