Abstract

250,382. Rose, W., and Rose Bros., (Gainsborough), Ltd. March 25, 1925. Coating materials in long lengths.-In apparatus for coating webs of paper &c. with gum &c. on one side only wherein the web from a roll X is drawn by rollers 16, 17 between a coating-roller 13 and a pressure roller 22, the latter is mounted on one end of a frame 20 pivoted at 21 and having at its other end a web engaging member 23. With this arrangement, the tension of the web W normally holds the roller 22 raised as shown against the action of a spring 24, but if the web breaks or ceases to be interposed between the rollers 13, 22, the roller 22 is withdrawn by the spring, whereby it is prevented from coming into contact with the coating-roller 13. A stop 26 is provided to limit the downward movement of the frame 20 in these circumstances. The roller 13 is fed with gum &c. by rollers 9, 7, from a roller 3 rotating in a bath 1, an adjustable doctor blade 5 being provided to regulate the amount of coating-material taken up by the roller 3.
