Abstract

<PICT:0934614/IV(a)/1> Apparatus for manufacturing coated paper comprises an unwind stand 1, a tension regulating means 19, a coating means 24 following the tension regulating means, doctor means 48 following the coating means, a further coating means 50 following said doctor means and a drying means following said further coating means and including a smooth non-adherent surface 100 against which said coating is pressed. In the embodiment shown unwind stand 1 carries a roll of stock 3 and the latter is fed as a web 5 firstly over flexing rolls 11, 13, then over a rubber covered tension roll 19 which is driven at a speed slightly in excess of the speed of web 5 so as to maintain a tension in the web between the stand 1 and the roll 19. The roll of stock 3 on stand 1 is held by a brake 9. On the feed side of roll 19 this tension is released so that the web is then under substantially zero-tension. From roll 19 the web is threaded beneath guide roll 15 and into precoating apparatus where the coating roll 24 may be rotated in either direction in a pan 26 containing the coating material. The web is then fed into a trowelling and scrubbing apparatus 30 which consists of a pair of spaced rolls 32 and 34 and a doctor blade 48, the rolls 32, 34 being mounted for vertical adjustment. The web then passes over roll 52 to a final coating apparatus 50 including a coating roll 57 and is then pressed into contact with a polished non-adherent surface 100 in the form of a rotating drum.
