Mortising. - A chain or perforated strip A passing over driving chain-wheels a, a<1> is constantly driven, and one or more sprocket wheels &c. b are supported in a machine bed &c. in such a manner as to engage the side of the chain &c. to receive the drive and to be adjustable parallel to the chain, contact being maintained by a guide-piece b<1> moving with the wheel and engaging the opposite side of the band. The Figure shows the application to a chain mortising machine, in which the sprocket wheel b drives the mortising- chain, and a second sprocket wheel C may drive through bevel gearing a tool for boring square holes.
