Abstract

246,173. Friedmann, L., Friedmann, M., and Schopp, N., (trading as Friedmann, A., [Firm of]. Jan. 19, 1925, [Convention date]. Multiple-way valves ; closure members.-A rotary valve of the conical or cylindrical type, more particularly for use in the main steam pipe of heating installations for railway carriages, comprises an annular cup-shaped packing-ring 4, Figs. 1 and 2. generally of rubber, secured by a screw-threaded holding member 5 to the valve disc or plug 6. In the open position, shown in Fig. 2, the packing-ring 4 is shielded by a projection 14, and the flexible part thereof is spaced a very small distance from the sealing-surfaces of the casing. When, however, the valve is closed the fluid pressure within the casing presses the flexible edge of the packing into close contact with the seating and thereby forms a tight closure. The bottom bearing of the valve member is shown of spherical shape with a passage 12, 13 which is opened when the valve is closed, so that the inside of the valve casing is open to the atmosphere and the pressure relieved. Water of condensation or leakage past the valve gathering in the, trough formed at the bottom of the casing is also discharged through the passage 12, 13.
