Abstract
243,712. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Vickery, H. W.). Nov. 28, 1924, [Convention date]. Supplying and controlling consuming devices.- A two-way conducting-liquid switch comprises chambers 10, 11 connected by a tube 12 and having pockets 13, 14 and dams 15, 16 so arranged that whem the gas in the chamber 10 is heated by a filament 21 the mercury is forced out of the chamber 10 into the chamber 11 into the position shown in the Figure so as to connect a terminal 19 with a terminal 20 instead of with a terminal 18. The switch is shown applied to a lighting system in which a source 23 is connected to the lights 25 through the terminals 19, 20 so long as the filaments 21 is kept heated by the source. Should the source 23, fail, mercury will flow from the chamber 11 to the chamber 10, breaking the circuit through the terminals 19, 20 but closing another circuit from a battery 27 to the lights 25 through the terminals 18, 19.
