Abstract

685,273. Supply systems for space discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 22, 1951 [March 14, 1950], No. 4331/51. Class 38 (iv). Voltage pulses induced in the secondary winding 11 of a transformer 9 by the opening of automatic or manually-operated switches 7, 7<SP>1</SP> cause capactative electrodes 12, 12<SP>1</SP> to ionize the gas and thereby ignite a plurality of seriesconnected discharge lamps 1, 1<SP>1</SP> supplied with A.C. or D.C. through a ballast impedance 2 and the primary winding 10 of the transformer. The switches are of the glow type, as shown, or of a thermal type. The transformer may alternatively be double-wound, and the ballast impedance may comprise an incandescent lamp. If the supply voltage is very low one switch 7<SP>1</SP> may be shunted by a resistor 19 to enable starting.
