Abstract

A grouting template formed from a flexible waterproof mat 1 with a slotted aperture 2. In use the mat is placed directly onto the building units 5 with the slot positioned accurately over the joint 4. Mortar is pressed though the slot in the template to fill the joint. The mat is then repositioned along the joint and the process repeated.

Title
Mortar / Grout Pointing Mat.
Background
This invention relates to a protective mat for use in the application of mortar / grout to the joints of building materials.
After the laying of building materials such as slabs, bricks, tiles and stone it is necessary to fill the void ( point) between the units to prevent water ingress.
The time consuming traditional method of wet 'pointing' requires skill and dexterity in order to keep the units free from staining by the mortar/grout.
Statement of invention
To overcome this the present invention proposes a flexible protective waterproof mat with a slot cut out within it in order to apply mortar/grout through it.
Advantages
Positioning the mat directly over the void between the building material units allows the wet mortar/grout to be pressed firmly into the joint whilst leaving the face of the unit clean and free from staining.
Repeating the process provides fast and accurate clean pointing.
Strong bond is formed between units.
Promotes competence and confidence to amateur and skilled individuals. Professional finish to project.
Introduction to drawings
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings:
- Figure 1 shows the protective mat invention as an item; and
- Figure 2 shows the protective mat invention in an applied situation.

Detailed Description
The flexible protective mortar/grout pointing mat in plan view 1 shown with the cut out slot 2 for the application of mortar/grout through it.
The protective mat as viewed from side on 3.
The protective mat 1 is placed directly onto the building units 5 and over the joint to be filled 4 with the cut out slot 2 positioned to accept mortar/grout.
Mortar/grout is pressed through the cut out slot 2 the protective mat 1 is then lifted and re-positioned further along the joint to be filled 4 with the cut out slot 2 ready to accept further mortar/grout.
The process is continued until mortar/grout begins to harden and the filled joints are then 'ironed' as required.
The face of the building units 5 are kept clean and free from staining as a result of implementing the protective mat 1 as it is produced from a strong, waterproof,
flexible and durable material.
