Abstract

A tool for applying mortar/grout to joints between stone slabs, bricks, blocks or setts on the ground or terrace, which is a single board comprising a piece of either plastic or high density rubber with a channel through which the mortar/grout is applied to the joint. The accompanying hand-tool is used to pack the mortar/grout and produce a final finish whilst allowing for the capture of any excess mortar/grout. The channel is of a defined length and width according to the width and length of the joints and has ends angled at 45 degrees. The hand-tool tongue has fronts of either 45 degrees or 90 degrees to enable the successful packing of the mortar/grout and collection of any excess.

Description

TITLE: POINTING /GROUTING TOOL
DESCRIPTION
This invention is designed to aid in the filling of the gaps while laying paving in the form of stone slabs, bricks, blocks, or setts.
The invention is a single piece of material, probably plastic or high density rubber with a varying sized channel in the centre. The channel size is dependent upon the length and thickness needed to complete the pointing between the slabs etc..
Additionally the board has a plastic hand tool to compact the mortar/grout, scrape away any excess, and give a neat fmish to the pointing.
The board is placed directly onto the horizontal slabs etc. with the channel aligned with the gap to be pointed. Any mortar/grout can be placed upon the top surface of the board and packed into the gap with the assistance of a trowel or other implements to fill the gap between the slabs etc.. The hand tool is then used to remove any excess and give a final level finish.
The channel length and width are dependent upon the type of paving etc and the pointing finish appropriate to the chosen material.
The end of each channel is tapered to allow easy removal of excess pointing material when using the hand tool.
The invention is further described by reference to the diagrams in the accompanying Figures.
Figure 1 shows the completely flat board with a central channel removed. The length of the Board (X) and more importantly the channel length (Y) and the channel width (Z) are variable due to the size of the slabs etc. and required pointing widths and lengths being used by tradesman or DIY person.
Figure 2 shows each end of the channel which has a 45 degree angle on exit to assist in the removal of excess pointing material.
Figure 3 shows the hand-tool used to pack the pointing. In the diagram (A) corresponds to the width of the channel and (B) corresponds to the thickness of the board (or depth of the channel) as shown in Figure 1. One face of the tongue is at 45 degrees.
This invention provides an inexpensive tool and also a clean and efficient way of pointing.

Claims (9)

  1. TITLE: POINTING /GROUTING TOOLCLAIMS1. A tool for applying mortar/grout to horizontal slabs, bricks, blocks, or setts, comprising of a single board with a central channel.
  2. 2. Alternative Boards are available to accommodate the multitude of channel lengths and widths necessary according to the user's requirements.
  3. 3. As Claim 2, the central channel allows mortar/grout to be easily packed between the slabs in a clean manner. Hence removing the task of cleaning the slabs after pointing.
  4. 4; A tool solely and specifically for pointing slabs being laid on the ground.
  5. 5. This tool is not applicable for any vertical structure.
  6. 6. An accompanying hand-tool which is used for further compaction of the mortar/grout and also the removal of any excess mortar/grout within the channel.
  7. 7. As Claim 2 and Claim 6, the hand-tool tongue will vary in dimension.
  8. 8. The width of the Board is sufficient to allow all excess mortar/grout to be collected and reused. Hence, reducing waste.
  9. 9. The size and weight of the Board is sufficient to enable stability while pointing is being done.
