Abstract

Tribology apparatus (2) comprises banks (4) of test sites (6) mounted on respective shafts (8) which are driven by a common drive unit. Each test site includes a rotatable annular disc (20) against which a pin (16) is arranged to be loaded. Friction between the disc and pin may be assessed in the presence of a lubricant which may bathe the disc and pin at their points of contact. The pin is operatively connected to a guide block (40) which is arranged to guide movement of the pin in a direction substantially parallel to the surface of the disc (20) towards a sensor (28) which measures friction. The wear on the pin may also be assessed. The apparatus and a method using the apparatus provide a means for high-throughput screening of materials.
