Abstract
A flood defence wall comprises interlocking plastic blocks 1. The wall may include strengthening bars 7 which pass through holes 2 in the blocks and into a concrete footing 8. The wall may further comprise cover plates 6, sealing strips 3 and ties for securing to hooks 5. Each block may be formed with joining pegs 9 on three of its faces and a recess to receive the pegs, to allow interlocking of adjacent blocks. The wall may be used to from a watertight barrier across an opening into a building, or to form a barrier to divert water away from an area under threat from flooding.
Description

Flood Block

DESCRIPTION

1/ A flood defence wall Fig I made from plastic interlocking blocks Fig 5 to include strengthening bars Fig 3 No 7, cover plate Fig 4 No 6, holding down ties Fig 2 No 4 & 5, and concrete surrounding footing Fig 2 No 8.

2/ The concept calls for the manufacture and distribution of a device to be installed to guard against the threat of flood waters flowing into a building or to divert the waters from protected areas.

3/ To accomplish this, Flood Block would be configured as shown in the accompanying illustration Fig 1. The purpose of this device would be to form a watertight barrier across openings into a structure or to form a barrier to divert water away from a targeted area. The device would function in essentially the same manner as conventional sandbags but would provide a more convenient, functional and economical means of achieving the desired objective. The device would be fabricates from plastic and would consist of interlocking blocks (similar to Legsign) which would be held together by strengthening bars The blocks would be assembled on a purpose-built concrete base consisting of at least one course and possible two courses of the blocks. The base would be installed by professionals but once laid the actual erection and dismantling of the barrier could be performed by the homeowner or contracted out to a builder.

4/ Each Flood Block would have eight joining pegs in the top and eight pegs in the front and back. Each block would contain a recess to receive these pegs. To add stab1ity to the completed structure, each block would have holes to enable the strengthening bars to be pushed through to the concrete base Once the wall is erected and the strengthening bars are in place, a sealing strip would be placed along the vertical joints, the strips are placed on the outside and inside then a cover plate would be placed over, this would act to both seal and add to the stability of the structure.

5/ The size of the blocks could vary in length with a standard size of 410 and a larger block of 820. The depth could also vary with a standard size of 330 but with smaller blocks of 250 also available 6/ With this configuration, Flood Block would serve as a functional aid that could be quickly put in place when needed to form a protective barrier around a building or other property to block the ingress of flood water. ft would be easier to handle than conventional sandbags. When not needed, the wall formed by these interlocking blocks could be dismantled and the blocks stored away until they are required again.
