Abstract
A funnel with a bowl 1 and a spout 2 witch includes a tube 4 which runs from a cutaway 6 in the spout vertically upwards through the funnel forming a sealed duct throughout. Beneath the cutaway 6 in the spout 2 is a chamber 3 that encases the bottom of the tube and in which sits a float 8. The float 8 is suspended by a rod 7 which is supported by a crosspiece 5 that sits across the top of the tube and the whole assembly hangs in the tube 4.
Description
S
SUSPENDED FLOAT LEVEL iNDICATOR The invention relates to a common funnel which is used for filling a container with a liquid with a minimal risk of spilling.
The design of the funnel is well known but its disadvantages are that are that if it fits tightly into the entrance of the container being filled, air trapped inside the container will blow back through the funnel causing the liquid to spurt If it is lose in the container it can become unstable and fall over. It is also impossible to gauge when the container is almost full and overflowing can occur.Previous attempts to overcome this problem using funnels with floats have not been very successful because of friction on moving parts.
An object of this invention is to provide a funnel that will fit tightly into a container being filled but still allows the trapped air to escape and provides a means of seeing when the container is almost full.
According to the present invention, there is provided a funnel including a tube that runs vertically upwards from a cutaway in the spout through the bowl to form a sealed vent when in use and which is suspended a float assembly.
Therefore this invention may provide a funnel with a vent that leads vertically upwards from a cutaway in the spout and in which is situated a float assembly. At the bottom end of the vent is a chamber which is situated below the cutaway in which sits the float suspended by a rod and cross piece from the top of the vent.
When a container is being filled with a liquid the air escapes through the vent and when the liquid reaches the cutaway it flows into the chamber causing the float to move indicating the container is almost full.
The funnel could be made of metal or plastics and the float assembly of plastics or light alloy.
Here follows a detailed description of the funnel with the help of the accompanying drawings.
FIGURE 1 Shows a view of the funnel from the side.
FIGURE 2 Shows a view of the funnel from the front.
FIGURE 3 Shows a view of the funnel from above.
FIGURE 4 Shows a cross sectional side view of the funnel.
FIGURE 5 Shows a view of the float assembly.
FIGURE 6 Shows a cross sectional side view of the funnel in a container being filled with a liquid.
FIGURE 7 Shows a cross sectional side view of a funnel in a container being filled with a liquid where the container is almost full and the liquid has entered the cutaway in the spout moving the float indicating the container is almost full.
As shown in figure 1 there is a funnel with a bowl I and spout 2 and a chamber 3 situated in the spout. A tube 4 runs up through the funnel and a crosspiece 5 lies across the top of the tube.
As shown in figure 2 the chamber 3 is situated beneath a cutaway 6 in the spout 2. The tube 4 from runs vertically upwards from the cut away 6 thus forming a sealed vent.
A stem 7 is supported by the crosspiece 5.
As shown in figure 3 the tube runs vertically upwards from the chamber 3 in the spout 2 and comes out in the bowl I. The crosspiece 5 sits across the tube 4 and supports the As shown in figure 4 the chamber 3 is situated below the cutaway 6 and is joined to the tube 4 forming a sealed duct throughout. In the chamber 3 is suspended a float 8 supported by a stem 7 and held in position by the crosspiece 5.
As shown in figure 5 the float assembly consists of a float 8, a stem 7 and crosspiece 5 As shown in figure 6 the funnel is in a container and is being used to fill the container with a liquid. The arrows indicate the air escaping.
As shown in figure 7 the container is almost full and the liquid is flowing into the chamber 3 and the float begins to move which will cause the stem 7 and crosspiece 5 to rise alerting the user.
Claims (3)
1) A funnel including a tube that runs vertically upwards from a cutaway in the spout through the bowl to form a sealed vent when in use and in which is suspended a float assembly.
2) A funnel according to claim 1 where the float is suspended in a chamber below the cutaway by a rod supported by a crosspiece that sits across the top of the tube.
3) A funnel according to claim 1 made of metal or plastics with the float assembly made of plastics or light alloy.
