Abstract

240,291. Napier & Son, Ltd., D., and Wilkinson, G. S. Sept. 19, 1924. Screw propellers.-In variable pitch air screws, each blade has a metal sleeve at its root with external splines which engage internal splines in a metal socket which is rotatably mounted in the hub and has its inner end of smaller diameter than the outer end, a nut locking the sleeve and socket together. The root of the blade A has a sleeve B riveted thereto, the sleeve having external splines B<3> and an upper conical face B'. The splines engage splines D<1> on a socket D which has an external thread carrying the locking nut E, the end E<1> being drawn up on to the conical face B<2>, and at the same time the root C is held firm against the conical shoulder D<3>. The socket has ball thrust bearings M and roller journal bearings J, J<1>, in conjunction with a member F which is rigidly held in the hub G' by the collar H screwed on to the flange G<2>. Plain bearings may be substituted for the rollers.
