Casings.-In a pump of the type described in the parent Specification, with its discharge branch h in line with its suction branch k, a non- return valve m forms, or is situated in, the wall separating the two branches. A single impeller pump is shown in Fig. 1 and two impellers in parallel are shown in Fig. 2. The pump is connected in series with the main pumps or with the gravity supply and the valve remains open as long as the pressure on the suction side exceeds that on the discharge side. When an additional head is required the pump is started and produces a greater pressure on the discharge side than exists on the suction side. The valve m then closes and the pump works in series with the remainder of the system.
