Abstract

234,669. Garrard, C. G. Aug. 2, 1924. Variable-speed friction gearing.-In friction gearing, suitable for turbine reducing-gears, automobile changespeed gears. &c. the driving-wheel 1 gears directly with the driven wheel 2 and also with an idler 6 engaging a freely mounted binding-ring 12, sprung over the wheels 6, 2, The bearings of the wheels 1, 6 may slide loosely in a slot 9 or they may be carried by freely swinging links. The wheels 1, 2, 6, may be re-arranged to gear together on a diameter of the wheel 12 in any desired order. Under maximum stress, the binding-ring should not move sufficiently to cause the angles between the surfaces at the contacting-points to exceed the natural angle of repose of the materials employed. Flanges 13 on alternate wheels, or bearing rollers on the framing, prevent movement of the wheels along their axes. A safety-ring of soft iron &c., may be shrunk or otherwise disposed around the binding-rings as a precaution against breaking. More than one set may be arranged in series for increase of speed ratio. In a change-speed gear, several sets of wheels producing different speeds are used and the idler roller in each set of wheels is mounted on a swinging or sliding bearing so that it can be moved circumferentially out of line with the driving and driven rollers by levers to release the binding-ring. In another form, shown in Fig. 11, the driving and driven shafts 26, 33 are aligned, and are connected for solid drive by a clutch 35. A friction gearing set 51 transmits the drive to a, lay shaft 30, sets 52, 53 providing for two forward speeds, and a set 50, comprising an idler 45, for a reverse. An idler shaft 32 carries the necessary idler wheels for the sets 51, 52, 53. The required speeds are obtained by moving the appropriate driven wheels 47, 48, and 49 axially into engagement with the remaining wheels of their sets. The disengaging-means may be used in a single set of wheels.
