Abstract

162,336. Caton, C. H. Dec. 19, 1919. Variable-speed chain gearing for motor-cycles and the like. Three gear pairs connect parallel driving and driven shafts a, b and yield four speed ratios. On the shaft a are a loose chainwheel 1 and two other wheels 2, 3 also loose and connected by a sleeve. On the shaft b are loose gears 4, 5 connected by a sleeve and a single gear 6. The four speeds are obtained through the three geared pairs separately, and through the wheels 1, 4, 5, 2, 3, 6 in that order, the changes being effected by moving two clutches 7, 8. According to the Provisional Specification, toothed gearing may be employed.
