Abstract

231,813. Smithe Machine Co., Inc., F. L., (Assignees of Novick, A.). April 4, 1924, [Convention date]. Envelopes, making.-A folding member for envelope blanks is mounted in a slide-member so as to be movable in two directions, substantially at right-angles to and in the plane of the blank respectively, the movements being separately effected. The invention is shown in connection with the folding of the side flaps of a bag-shaped envelope, and each folding member comprises. two blades 91, 92, which move upwardly together to raise the side flaps, and then move inwardly as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the blade 92 overtakitg the blade 91 to press the central seam. A finger 93 retards one flap so that it is placed over the other flap, which has been gummed. The side flaps are raised prior to the operation of the blades 91, 92 by lifters 90. The blanks are fed by a belt 15 beneath forming blades 12, 13, which are placed above guides 18, 19, and are centred and aligned against stops 65 on a bar which carries the bottom flap folding plate 68. The folded envelope is delivered between rollers 86, 87 by the movement of the blades 12, 13. The folding blade 91 is carried by a member 100 sliding in a T-shaped frame 105 bolted to the machine frame 8. Links 142 operated by endcams give the member 100 a longitudinal movement, while a blade 114 sliding in the frame 105 and engaging a slot 120 in the member, gives it a short, slow, transverse movement to raise the side flap. A cam 130 and a lever 125 effect this movement. The folding blade 92 is pivoted at its rear end to a lever 151, the other end of which is mounted on a pin 153 on the blade 114, passing through the frame 105. A link 156 connects the member 100 with the lever 151, thus increasing the longitudinal movement of the blade 92. A spring 159 urges the blade 92 towards the blade 91. The side flap lifters 90 are mounted on rods 170 sliding in guides 172 and operated from a cam 184 through levers and links. The retarding finger 93 is adjustably mounted on a pin 195 carried on a bracket 196 secured to the machine frame.
