Abstract

384,173. Shock-absorbers. MORENO, L., Via Asti, Turin, Italy. April 26, 1932, No. 11944. [Class 108, (iii).] A frictional vibrationdamper for vehicles and other purposes includes frictional elements which are forced outwardly by a core or wedge when movement takes place in one direction, into contact with a tapered guide so that the resistance to motion depends upon the position of the frictional elements. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a shaft 3 oscillated by an arm 2 carries an arm 4 connected by a link to a reciprocating element comprising a conical or similar wedge member 11 adapted to force apart members 8 having faces 9 of frictional material which engage the slowly tapered interior of the casing. Movement towards the left is thus progressively braked while movement in the opposite direction is free. In a modification the shaft 3 and operating mechanism is dispensed with, the casing being connected to one part such as the frame of the vehicle and the central member 5 to the other part such as an axle. The conical member 11 may expand shoes 8 by engagement with cylindrical bearing members 10, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
