Abstract

A closure, for example for a window or window frame, is secured within its fixed frame, both by the engagement of the distal end 134 of elongate bolt 112, in a keeper 130 mounted on the fixed frame, and by a detent 136 projecting laterally from an intermediate region of the bolt 112, to engage in a keeper mounted on the fixed frame. <IMAGE>

Description

SECUREMENT OF CLOSURES This invention relates to apparatus for securing a closure, for example a door or, especially, a window, in its closed position in a fixed frame therefor.
In the terminology of this specification, the closure has a "hinged rail" and a "leading rail" opposite to the hinged rail, and respective ends of these rails are secured together by "transverse rails", thereby forming a rectangle. The fixed frame has a "hinging rail" and a "contact rail", contacted by the leading rail of the vent frame on closure. Respective ends of these rails are connected together by "lateral rails", thereby forming a rectangle.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided an assembly of a closure hinged within a fixed frame, wherein the closure includes a closure device having a control member and a bolt, coupled together so that movement of the control member causes longitudinal movement of the bolt, the distal end of the bolt being in the region of a corner of the closure at one end of the leading rail of the closure, and the bolt having at least one detent projecting towards the fixed frame, the or each detent being selectively locatable in a respective keeper mounted on the fixed frame, wherein the bolt is selectively movable so that its end extends beyond the said corner, thereby to co-operate with the fixed frame and effect a first mode of securement, and so that the or each said detent engages in said respective keeper, and effect a second mode of securement.
Suitably the fixed frame is fitted with a keeper within which the distal end of the bolt may engage.
Preferably, the control member is a rotary handle.
Preferably, the bolt has a plurality of said detents.
The assembly may suitably comprise two such bolts, effecting the first mode of securement at both said corners controlled by a common control member, or by independent control members, as further described in our co-filed patent applications entitled "Window Securement" and "Apparatus for Locking a Closure". The content of these is incorporated herein by reference.
In accordance with the present invention, the closure device could be mounted on a transverse rail of the closure, so that it selectively engages the contact rail of the fixed frame, thereby to effect said first mode of securement, and so that the second mode of securement is achieved by the or each detent/keeper between the transverse rail of the closure and the adjoining lateral rail of the fixed frame. In this event, such a closure device is preferably mounted on each transverse rail.
Preferably, however, the or each closure device is mounted on the leading rail.
Preferably, the or each bolt is carried externally of the vent frame not within a UPVC profile.
This apparatus provides good security, in particular because of the co-operation of the distal end of the bolt with the fixed frame, and good weatherproofing, in particular because of the presence of one or more cooperating detents/keepers.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows, schematically, the lower part of a tophinged outwardly opening casement window, comprising a vent frame and fixed frame; Fig. 2 shows, in perspective view, a keeper; Fig. 3 is a schematic view in the direction of arrow "A", showing the end of a bolt within the keeper, and retracted therefrom; Fig. 4 shows, in partial side view, apparatus in accordance with the invention, in the locked condition, with the handle removed; and Fig. 5 is a plan view complimentary to the side view of Fig. 4.
The window assembly comprises a top-hinged glazed vent frame 2, the frame being constructed of UPVe profiles; and a UPVC fixed frame 4. The vent frame has, mounted on its leading rail 6, two independently operable closure devices 8, 10. Each closure device comprises a lockable rotary handle 12, coupled in standard manner to a bolt 14 of strip metal, such that the bolt can move back and forth. The gearing employed to achieve this may be the standard gearing used for conventional espagnolette fittings. Each bolt extends to a respective end of the leading rail. When the handle is moved to lock the window, the bolt is moved beyond the end of the leading rail, to locate within a keeper 16 mounted at the bottom end of the appropriate lateral rail 18 of the fixed frame.
As shown in Fig. 2, each keeper has a slot 18 within which the bolt locates, the bolt being of flat strip form.
Each keeper also has two securement holes 20. As shown in Fig. 3, to assist the engagement, the end of each bolt is tapered at 22, and the edges of the slot 18 are chamfered at 24.
As is clearly shown in Fig. 1, each bolt is carried externally of the vent frame, being face mounted on the leading face of the leading rail. Each bolt has two detents in the form of headed rollers 26, each selectively engageable within a respective keeper 28 mounted on the opposite face of the contact rail of the fixed frame.
Thus, the system provides four securement points along the leading rail, and two securement points beyond the leading rail, at the bottom ends of the lateral rails of the fixed frame.
It will be observed in Fig. 1 that each bolt 14 extends along approximately one-third of the leading rail.
Thus each handle 12 is located approximately one-sixth of the way along the leading rail, from the nearer corner.
The bolts of the embodiment of Figs. 1 to 3 may be cropped to the right length. In another embodiment they could be of adjustable length, for example by means of a screw adjustment.
With reference to Figs. 4 and 5, the locking apparatus comprises a lockcase 106 housing a gearing mechanism; a lockable handle 108; and two colinear bolts 110, 112 of strip metal, one extending from the lockcase to one corner of the leading rail, and the other extending from the opposite side of the lockcase, to the other corner of the leading rail. The bolts are movable longitudinally, in opposite directions, on turning the handle 108, through the agency of the gearing mechanism.
Keepers 130 are secured to the respective lateral rails of the fixed frame, each keeper having a slot 132 for receipt of the distal end 134 of the respective bolt.
Each such distal end 134 is tapered, as shown in Fig. 3.
Moreover the slot 132 may be chamfered.
Each bolt has mounted thereon two transverse detents 136, each facing towards the contact rail of the fixed frame. One such detent is shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Each detent is in the form of a headed roller, selectively engageable within the appropriate respective keeper 138 secured to the opposite face of the contact rail of the fixed frame.
It will be observed in Figs. 1 and 5 that the keepers 28, 138 are of a standard type having a slot for night venting as well as for complete closure; and have four slots, so that the keeper is universal. It will be appreciated that only one slot is used in the Figs. 1 and 5 embodiment. An alternative embodiment employs narrower bolts 14, 110, 112 and end keepers 16, 130 with two colinear slots 18, 132, so that night venting is possible.
In another embodiment, instead of the bolts having detents in the form of headed rollers or pins, being fixed abutment members on the bolt, the bolts may have detents of the "drop nose" type. A detent of the "drop nose" type is movable about a pivot, between a stowed position in which it does not protrude from the bolt, and a securement position in which it does protrude, and is received within a keeper secured to the contact rail.
The reader's attention is directed to all papers and documents which are filed concurrently with or previous to this specification in connection with this application and which are open to public inspection with this specification, and the contents of all such papers and documents are incorporated herein by reference.
Each feature disclosed in this specification (including any accompanying claims, abst;ct and drawings), may be replaced by alternative features serving the same, equivalent or similar purpose, unless expressly stated otherwise. Thus, unless expressly stated otherwise, each feature disclosed is one example only of a generic series of equivalent or similar features.
