Abstract

Gravity, materials falling by; discharging-devices.-Coal &c. is fed into the space between pervious walls b, c in the upper part of a casing having a plate d which guides the material over stepped or conical plates e, f in countercurrent to hot air or gas, which is admitted to the casing through the pipe i, and which is exhausted therefrom through a pipe in the upper part of the casing. The material is discharged from the apparatus through a rotary discharge device k. Cold air is admitted to the casing through the openings m. The walls b, c may be fixed or rotary, and in the former case the plate d may be rotated. If furnace gases are used for drying purposes, they are first passed through an antechamber to preheat wet coal and diminish the danger of igniting the dry coal in the lower part of the casing.
