Abstract
226,885. Calthrop, E. R. Oct. 2, 1923. Concrete vessels. - Cellular reinforced-concrete ships, floating forts, and like structures are built bv assembling the solid or reticulated metal sheets or plates described in Specification 226,886, [Class 20 (i), Buildings and structures, Kinds &c. of], and casting concrete thereon by means of temporary shuttering. The plates a have curved vertical edges, which overlap and are bolted or otherwise secured together. Bars or pipes may be inserted in the junctions. The plates are held temporarily by clips e, Fig. 8, placed over the junction and having three legs of unequal length. Reticulated reinforcing sheets may be joined by clips u, Fig. 11, having four legs bent to embrace the vertical overlaps. The shuttering consists of sides i connected by links to corner portions, and is separated by distance pieces m from the skeleton. It is lowered into the cells by ropes, and is expanded into place by screws o on rings n, or by jacks. Boxes r on the shuttering form ledges t on the concrete to support the shuttering above. The concrete is vibrated and may be dried by hot air. Flooring or decking for the cells may consist of metal or other plates in single or triple sheets. For stronger cells, the reinforcing sheets may be duplicated or triplicated. Concrete slabs may be precast on to the lower part of each sheet or plate, to prevent the plastic concrete from overflowing at the lower edges of the shuttering. Alternatively, the cells may be composed of precast concrete slabs reinforced by the sheets described above, and with the horizontal and vertical joints cast in situ.
