Abstract

223,376. Holdsworth, W. Sept. 14, 1923. Combing - machines.- In a machine of the kind described in Specification 202,140, the feed is effected by raising the feed box from a lower inclined position to an upper inclined position, whilst the wool is held in the comb circle by a retaining device, the upper jaw of the feed box being raised. The combing-device comprises an endless belt provided with graded rows of teeth, and with lifting devices between each pair of rows to prevent the fibre being forced to the bottom of the teeth. The feed box A, Fig. 3, is hinged, at a to the rotating comb circle B and is raised for feed-purposes by the adjustable cam plate a<5>, whilst the wool is held in the comb teeth C by plates a<10> on a bracket a<9>, Fig. 4. The upper jaw a<1> of the feed box is opened by the conical bowl a<6> engaging the bowl a' on the jaw. A roller a<4> rests on the wool by its own weight or under spring pressure. The upper jaw of the feed box is then closed and the wool is raised out of the teeth C by an inclined knife a<l2> and travels along a guide plate a<13> to the combing- device D. The feed box then descends from the cam plate a' and the bowl a' engages a rail a<8>, thereby slightly raising the upper jaw a'. The fringe is pressed into the comb teeth by a brush a<14>, and is laid flat on a guide plate a<15> by a roller a<16>. It then passes under the plates a<10> to the drawing-off rollers E. The combing-davice comprises a belt provided with rows of teeth D, Fig. 9, and lifting-devices d formed of V-shaped pieces of metal. At one edge of the belt are a series of flange pieces d<1> which pass through the wool and straighten it preparatory to the actual combing operation. The waste is -removed from the combs by a brush d' and drawn away down a conduit d<8> by suction. The comb circle B is driven from one of the main shafts e<1 >through a chain of gearing d<6>. The comb is driven by a chain d' through bevel gears d<4> and gear d<5> from one of the gears in the train d<6>. The direction of movement of the comb belt can be reversed to effect the combing in an upward direction by transferring the drive to an adjacent gear in the train d<6>. In this case the upper jaws will be held closed during the combing by a spring &c. engaging a ledge a<11> on the jaw.
