Abstract

609,356. Means for producing linear motion. HICKLING, F. O. March 12, 1946, No. 7665. [Classes 80 (i) and 8.0 (iii)] Cam mechanism for steering gears and other purposes comprises a driving shaft 6 having a gear 5 meshing a gear 7 on a rod 1, the latter having a cam groove 9 engaged by a pin 10 fixed in the casing 3. Thus rotation of the shaft 6, which may be a vehicle steering column produces axial movement of the rod 1 which is also caused to revolve by the spiral gear 9 and cam pin 10. The latter absorbs shocks transmitted from the road wheels to the rod 1. In a modification, the gear 7 and cam surface 9 are superimposed. In a further modification, the members 7, 9 are rotatably mounted on the rod 1, which is slidably mounted in the housing 3, and in this case the rod 1 and the part carrying the cam 9 and gear 7 may have a screw-threaded connection with one another. The cam 9 may be of variable pitch.
