Abstract

Artificial peat is made by close cutting the vegetation growing on peat land, filling a channel cut in said land with the cut material, and covering with growing material. The cut material is converted into peat in about one year.

Description

ARTIFICIAL ?-rAT PRODUCTION STAGE 1 The natural mire tpe vegetation growing on peat land should be close cut, ncluding mosses and the material displaced from an area lOft wide with a suitable mower fitted with a pickup and side deliver conveyor or any other method.
STAGE 2 Dig channel in peat approx 3ft wide X 3ft deep with peat cutting machine placing peat blocks on one side and top 3 inches of growing material (roots ato) on the other. The channel can be dug with any other suitable digging machine or tracked excavator or by hand using peat diging tools.
STAGE 3. Cut sufficient vegetation each side of channel together with previous cut material to rill to heaped surface with mower as decribed above or any other method. If the land has been worked for peat in the past stage i and 2 may not be necessary and cut material can be placed in old peat channels.
STAGE 4. when vegetation has settled in channel replace op 3 inches of growing materIal and remove peat blocks.
The material is converted to peat with little loss to the atmosphere, most of the energy collected by the plants in the growing season is trapped wit--L the material by the acidic conditions.
The artificial peat could be removed in approx. 1 year or a longer time may be required for a more mature product, the material to be dug from channel, air dried to approx. 60% moisture content and granulated for garden use or cut or pressed into blocks and air dried for fuel.
Nutrient poor conditions on land favours the growth of plants with a high percentage of fixed carbon.
Artificial peat can be produced on clay land where the vegetation is suitable or te vegetation can be planted or encouraged to grow by water table management.
The vegetation should be lose ut and placed-in a channel uc n ne clay or a ditch with tne ends blocked or a hollow :n the and where damp conditions persist.

4 As claim 1 & 3 to process into various elements.
5 A new use for vegetation that is unsuitable for animal feed.
6 A process that removes carbon-dioxide from the atmosphere.
7 A new use for agricultural land.
