Abstract

A tank whose lower part is of pyramidal form, which may be used as a sewage settling tank, is cleaned by scrapers 4 located in the corners of the tank and connected by chains 5, the scrapers and chains being lowered together by cables 3 to scrape deposits from the vertical and inclined walls of the tank towards the bottom outlet. Cables may be manually or power-operated. <IMAGE>

Description

SCRAPER SYSTEM FOR HOPPER (PYRAMIDAL) BOTTOMED TANKS DESCRIPTION This invention relates to equipment for scraping deposits from the walls (vertical and sloping) of hopper bottomed (pyramidal) tanks used usually (but not exclusively) as settling tanks at Sewage Treatment Works.
Methods of scraping circular and rectangular tanks are well known, and, until the recent introduction of automatic desludging it has been assumed that pyramidal tanks did not require scraping because the angle of the sides was 'self-cleaning". This has proved not to be the case and this invention is intended to remove deposits from the scraped surfaces.
Treatment processes other than sewage treatment use hopper (pyramidal) bottomed tanks and this method cleaning may be applied to these processes (eg. paper production).
According to the present invention there are provided four corner scraper blades and a method of lowering and raising them to effect a scraping action to dislodge materials adhering to the surfaces. The corner scrapers may, if required, be linked together by a flexible member (eg. chain or similar device) to effect a scraping or dislodging action to materials adhering to the tank sides (vertical and/or sloping).
The lowering and raising system may be either hand operated or mechanically driven with or without automatic controls as desired.
A specific embodyment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 is a section of a typical Hopper bottomed tank.
Figure 2 is a plan of a typical Hopper bottomed tank.
Referring to the drawing:- The tank (1) has in each corner and supported from the tank structure, a pulley (2) (or similar device) upon which runs a cable (3) (or similar support) to which is attached a corner scraper (4). Linking the corner scrapers is a chain (5) (or similar device) which may or may not be incorporated.
Its incorporation may be dependent upon the obstructions (pipes or valves) within the tank.
Scum boards (7), or similar obstructions, may determine the siting of the pulleys (2) and the number and arrangement of the pulleys.
The equipment (6) for raising and lowering is indicated schematically and may be hand operated or motorised. Motorised systems may, if required, include various safety devices to detect tight or slack cables. The position and number of the raising and lowering equipment (2) (6) may be dependent upon other equipment in the tanks and this may in turn effect the arrangement of pulleys (2).
By operating the equipment (6) the corner scrapers will be lowered towards the tank sump. The blades will be shaped to suit the angle of the tank corners and will dislodge material into the sump.
The chain will also dislodge material into the sump and will sag and remain in contact with the tank sides as the tank corners converge towards the sump. Raising the corner scrapers will also have a dislodging effect.
The periods between operating cycles will be determined to suit the particular treatment process and may be automatically controlled.

Claims (2)

  1. Claim 1.
A system for scraping Hopper bottomed (pyramidal) tanks compris- ing four corner scrapers and equipment to raise and lower the four corner scrapers. The raising and lowering equipment may, or may not be motorised or automated, to suit the system requirements.
  2. Claim 2.
A scraper system as claimed in Claim 1 with a chain or similar device linking the corners to effect scraping of the surfaces between the corners.
