220,411. Taylor, H. G., and Smith, A. P. June 8, 1923. Apparatus fitted to cranes. - A jib crane F suspended from an overhead runway A is provided with a balance weight N, wholly of a pendulous character, which automatically balances the load so that the crane is not tilted when the load is lifted. A pointer may be attached to the pendulum in order to indicate on a scale the approximate weight of the load. As shown, the weight N is suspended from the crane at M and carries the hoisting motor and gear. The hoisting rope is reeved over pulleys K on the jib and S on the balance weight, so that the first effect of hauling is to move the weight out until its moment about the point of suspension of the jib is approximately equal to the moment of the load. In a modification, the hoisting motor drives through a differential gear of which one member drives the hoisting drum and the other member drives a drum for hauling at the pendulum. The motor may be mounted in the jib structure.
