A hinge bolt assembly comprises a hinge bolt 6 for driving into an edge of a door 1 leaving a head end portion 7 projecting, a socket member adapted 8 fully to enclose the head portion 7 of the bolt 6 for recessing into a door frame 3, a fixing plate 10 secured to the socket member 8, and bolt means 11 for passing through the fixing plate and a said door frame for tightening at the secure side of such doorway. <IMAGE>

Description

HINGE BOLT ASSEMBLY This invention relates to a hinge bolt assembly.

The use of hinge bolts for improving the level of physical security at the hinge side of a door is well known. Such hinge bolt arrangements as have hitherto been used consist of a pin driven into the hinged edge of a door leaving a head projecting which acts as a static bolt which pivots with the door and into a hole cut into the door frame behind a socket plate. It is usual to use two or more such hinge bolt assemblies in any given doorway where the added degree of security is desired.

A disadvantage of this known type of hinge bolt assembly is that the door can still be forced away from its frame, and it is an object of the present invention to provide a hinge bolt assembly which affords an increased measure of security.

According to the present invention, there is provided a hinge bolt assembly comprising a hinge bolt for driving into an edge of a door leaving an end portion (hereinafter called "head portion") projecting. a socket member adapted fully to enclose the head portion of the bolt for recessing into a door frame, a fixing plate secured to the socket member, and bolt means for passing through the fixing plate and a said door frame for tightening at the secure side of such doorway.

Because the socket wholly encloses the head of the bolt. and because the socket is adapted to be secured through the thickness of a door frame, the assembly of the present invention provides considerable additional security over conventional hinge bolt arrangements.

In some preferred embodiments of the invention, the fixing plate and the socket are separable, and secured together by machine screws.

This allows the socket alone to be secured as by welding or brazing into a metal door frame.

The invention also includes a hinge bolt assembly mounted in a doorway. such assembly comprising a hinge bolt driven into an edge of a door leaving a head portion projecting, a socket member adapted fully to enclose the head portion of the bolt recessed into a door frame, the door frame being of metal, and the socket member being welded or brazed thereto.

A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal cross section through a door and door frame incorporating a hinge bolt assembly. and Figure 2 is an elevation of a hinge bolt socket set into a door frame.

In Figure 1, a door 1 is hinged about pivot axis 2 to a door frame 3. The hinged edge of the door is drilled with a suitable sized hole 4, and a knurled portion 5 of a hinge bolt 6 is inserted, e.g. hammered, into the hole 4 as a tight fit, leaving a head 7 of the hinge bolt projecting. The knurled portion 5 of the'hinge bolt is suitably 12.5mm in diameter before knurling.

A socket 8 for the head 7 of the hinge bolt is set into the door frame 3. Unlike previously known socket arrangements which simply consist of a socket plate fixed over a hole cut in the door frame. the socket 8 of the present invention is a full socket adapted to surround the bolt head. The socket is fixed by countersunk machine screws 9 to a fixing plate 10, and the fixing plate 10 is in turn fixed to the door frame by countersunk machine screws 11 which lead through holes drilled in the door frame 3 for securing by washers 12 and nuts 13.

In the embodiment illustrated. the washers and nuts such as 12,13 are sunk well into the secure side of the door frame and they are covered by plugs such as 14 to present a flat surface at that side of the door frame. Such plugs 14 may be of wood. which may be selected and cut to match the colour and grain of the timber of the door frame.

The hinge bolt assembly is of robust construction and is suitably of steel.

If it is desired to seat the socket in a metal frame, the socket 8 may be detached from the fixing plate 10 and set in place by welding or brazing as desired.

Claims

1. A hinge bolt assembly comprising a hinge bolt for driving into an edge of a door leaving an end portion (hereinafter called "head portion") projecting. a socket member adapted fully to enclose the head portion of the bolt for recessing into a door frame, a fixing plate secured to the socket member, and bolt means for passing through the fixing plate and a said door frame for tightening at the secure side of such doorway.

2. A hinge bolt assembly according to claim 1, wherein the fixing plate and the socket are separable, and secured together by machine screws.

3. A hinge bolt assembly mounted in a doorway, such assembly comprising a hinge bolt driven into an edge of a door leaving a head portion projecting, a socket member adapted fully to enclose the head portion of the bolt recessed into a door frame, the door frame being of metal, and the socket member being welded our brazed thereto.

4. A hinge bolt assembly substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
