Abstract
For correcting the positioning of a door (2) (not shown) relative to a door frame (3) or surround, a door hinge is provided with an adjustment device which allows positional correction. The hinge part (6) which is secured to the door frame (3) comprises two mutually parallel supporting pins (8, 10) projecting from the hinge pivot pin 7 at right angles and engaging in bores (48) in the door frame or in a bearing block (11) fixed to the door frame. By means of a spreading screw (40) the two supporting pins (8, 10) are spread apart so that they are held fast in the bores (48) by friction. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
An adjustable door hinge
The invention relates to a door hinge of the kind for adjustablyfixing a doorto a door frame, the hinge part designed to engage with the door frame having two mutually parallel supporting pins which are disposed transversely to the axis of hinge rotation and are designed to engage in bores, and jamming devices being provided for jamming the supporting pins fast in the bores.
There is a need with door hinges for it to be possible to correct the positioning of the door relative to the door frame after the door has been hung, without the production of the hinge being complicated thereby. The object of the invention is to provide such a door hinge.
According to the invention a door hinge of the kind described is characterised in that to enable the supporting pins to be adjusted axially relatively to the bores a screw is provided which engages in the door frame or a bearing block connected to the door frame, and a jamming device in the form of a wedge or spreading device co-acts with the screw so that it is forced between the supporting pins as the screw is screwed into the door frame or bearing block.
The invention enables the simplification of the mounting of the door hinge and its better adaptation to the given structural conditions, both with wooden frames and also with metal frames. Positional correction of the door hinge and hence of the door relative to the door frame can also be carried out subsequent to the fitting of the hinge without the hinge having to be taken off or replaced.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 7 is a vertical sectional displaced through 90" compared with the view of Figure 6,
Figure 8 is a horizontal section through a second embodiment.
Figure 9 is a vertical section similar to that of
Figure 3, showing a third embodiment,
Figure 10 is a section similar to Figure 4, through the embodiment shown in Figure 9.
Figure ii is a horizontal section through a fourth embodiment for doors which are lap fitting,
Figure 12 is a vertical section through fifth embodiment showing the door hinge as fixed to a wooden frame.
The door hinge shown in Figures 1 to 5 comprises a first hinge part 6 which is connected to a door frame 3. The term "frame" includes both a profiled steel frame and also a wooden frame. A second hinge part 5 which can pivot relatively to the first hinge part is screwed to a door 2 which preferably is flush fitting when closed. A pivot pin 7 which is fixed in the first hinge part 6 passes through the second hinge part 5 which is connected to a door hinge leaf 13. The door hinge leaf 13 is of arcuate shape over more than half its periphery, preferably over 3/4 of its periphery, and has a bore at the centre of the arc for accommodating a fixing screw 19 which engages in the door 2. The door hinge leaf 13 is accommodated in a cylindrical recess formed by a milling machine or the like in the edge surface of the door 2.
A cover plate 17 whose shape can best be seen in
Figure 2 is used to prevent rotation of the leaf 13 in the cylindrical recess and to cover an adjustment gap between the door 2 and frame 3. The first hinge part 6 comprises two parallel supporting pins 8,10 which engage in corresponding parallel bores provided one above the other in a bearing block 11 welded to the door frame 3. These two supporting pins 8, 10 extend transversely to the axis of the pivot pin 7. To secure the positioning of these supporting pins 8, 10 relative to the door frame 3, and thus to the bearing block 11, a jamming device in the form of a wedge 24 is forced between the two bearing pins 8, 10 to spread them apart slightly and so cause them to bind frictionally with walls of the bores in which they are located. The spreading effect is produced with the aid of a screw 26 which rests via its head against the wedge 24, so that when the screw 26 is tightened into the bearing block if forces the wedge between the two supporting pins 8, 10. The wedge 24 is secured against rotation in a milled recess 22 in the bearing block 11 and which in section is in the shape of a sector of a circle. The milled recess 22 is preferably approximately semi-cylindrical. The screw 26 has an internal hexagonal recess 28 so that it can be screwed forcefully with a tool into the thread in the bearing block 11, which is made of metal. Correction of the position of the door can therefore be carried out by causing the bearing pins 8, 10 to penetrate more or less deeply into their associated bores 48.
A sleeve of the second hinge part 5 rests against a shoulder 34 on pivot pin 7 which is screwed into a sleeve portion of the first hinge part 6 through a threaded section 30. The upper hinge part 5 therefore does not rest on the end face of the first hinge part 6 but on a shoulder 34 on the pivot pin 7. So that this pivot pin 7 cannot be rotated unintentionally, a threaded pin 38 with a left-hand thread is screwed into the bottom of the hinge part 6. This threaded pin 3 has an internal hexagonal recess 29 at its lower end and the pivot pin 7 has an internal hexagonal recess 25 at its upper end, so that it is possible to apply sufficient force with a tool to the pins 3 and 7 for adjusting and locking the threaded section 30 and hence the pin 7 in the desired vertical position. The sleeve portion of the first hinge part 6 above its threaded section has an enlarged cylindrical bore at the top so that a cylindrical space 32 is provided for permitting the adjustment. The cylindrical boss part of the pivot pin 7 which projects into this annular space 32 is rotatable in it, but with as little play as possible. It is therefore possible with this door hinge to carry out correction of the vertical positioning of the door 2.
In Figures 6 and 8 another embodiment of door hinge is shown that is primarily suitable for fixing in a wooden frame. The two parallel supporting pins 8, 10 projecting one above the other from the first hinge part 6 are inserted in corresponding bores 48 in the wooden frame 12. These two supporting pins 8, 10 are jammed in this instance with the aid of a screw with a head 40 constituting a wedge which comprises a spreading section 46 of flared conical or trumpet shape which spreads the two supporting pins 8, 10 apart when the threaded shank 42 is screwed into the frame 12, thereby clamping them securely in the bores 48 by friction. The head 40 is provided with a hexagonal opening 44 for accommodating a suitable tool to exert sufficient pressure for this purpose. In other respects, operation is similar to that of the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 5.
The screw is made relatively long and may equal or exceed the length of the supporting pins 8, 10. The length of the thread should amount to more than fourtimesthe diameter of the thread.
In Figures 9 and 10 an embodiment is shown in which, differing from Figures 6 to 8, the spreading effect on the two supporting pins 8, 10 is effected by means of a screw 40 with a spherical spreading section 46. This spreading section 46 is located between the screw head 40 equipped with an internal hexagonal recess 44 and the threaded shank 42 which is screwed into the bearing block 11. In order to prevent the supporting pins 8, 10 from slipping inadvertently out of the bores 48, the two supporting pins 8, 10 are each provided with a longitudinal section 47 of reduced diameter intermediate their ends to form shoulders at the ends of the section 47. The axial length of sections 47 determines the amount of adjustment possible. If the screw 40 should start to work loose, the shoulders formed at the end of the recesses 47 press against the spreading section section 46 of the screw 40 and prevent the supporting pins 8,10 from sliding unintentionally out of the bores 48.
Correction of the vertical positioning of the second hinge part 5 connected to the door can be effected by means of a threaded pin 38 which is screwed into a threaded sleeve section of the first hinge part 6 from below. The pivot pin 7 which is inserted from above and is integral with the second hinge part 5 rests via its lower end on the threaded pin 38 which is pointed at the top.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 11 there is a door 2 with an overlap 61, i.e. it is lap fitting. A screw-in pin 60 engages obliquely in the door. The two threadless supporting pins 8, 10 (only one of which is visible) are located in bores 48 in the bearing block 11 and are spread apart by a threaded spreading section 46 which is conical in shape. The section 46 is located at the front end of a threaded pin 42 which has an internal hexagonal recess 44 in its head for locating a hexagonal key. Here again there is a longitudinal section of reduced diameter on the supporting pins 8, 10 for the same purpose as described with reference to Figures 9 and 10.
An embodiment which is intended for wooden frames 12 is shown in Figure 12. The two supporting pins 8, 10 are each equipped in the vicinity of the screw with a milled recess 56 whose peripheral wall is in the shape of a sector of a circle with a greater radius than that of the screw head 40. So that the same door hinge can be used for doors which open to the left or to the right, the milled recess 56 is provided on opposite sides of the pins 8, 10. The centre of the milled recess 56 extends parallel to them bore 48 for the threaded shank 42. Since the radius of the milled recess 56 is greater than the radius of * the screw head 40 there is an adjustment range for the supporting pins 8, 10 which is defined by the shoulders 58.
The spreading of the two supporting pins 8, 10 is effected by a conical section 46 between the screw head 40 and the saw-tooth type threaded section 42 engaging in the wooden frame 12.
The covering plate 17 which covers the adjustment gap 14 is preferably fixed to the door hinge leaf 13 by spot welding and, together with the pins 36, serves to prevent rotation of the door hinge leaf 13.
The various embodiments described can also be used in combination insofar as this is rational and technically possible. In particular, the arrangement of the longitudinal section 47 of reduced diameter is also possible in the embodiments shown in Figures 1 -8and11.
