Abstract

There is disclosed an adjustable template in the form of a rectangular frame (10) comprising side rails (11, 12, 13 & 14) connected by corner members (15, 16, 17 & 18). Adjacent pairs of corner members are slidable relative to oppositely disposed side rails whereby the width and height of the template may be adjusted. Means is provided for securing the corner members to the side rails at desired positions. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Adjustable template This invention concerns an adjustable template suitable for use in the building and construction industries.
Traditionally when building an ordinary domestic dwelling for example, the window frames are placed in position and the walls constructed around them. This of course ensures that the window receiving apertures in the brickwork are correctly sized. More and more nowadays are special windows utilised which are frequently delivered to site as the building nears completion, the walls having been constructed around templates of the same sizes as the windows which are to replace them. Construction of the templates on site from timber is a time consuming and costly operation and such templates are invariably broken up after they have served their purpose.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an adjustable template which can be reused an indefinite number of times.
According to the present invention there is provided an adjustable template in the form of a rectangular frame comprised by four side rails connected by four corner members, adjacent pairs of corner members being slidable relative to oppositely disposed side rails whereby the width and height of the template may be adjusted, and there being means for securing the corner members to the side rails at desired positions.
The side rails and corner members may be of tubular square section, the ends of the side rails being telescopically received in limbs of the corner members.
The securing means may permit infinitely variable adjustment within the permitted range of movement.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawings which show, by way of exmaple only, one form of adjustable template embodying same.
Of the drawings: Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the template; Figure 2 shows a perspective view of a corner member of the template of Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a perspective view of a side rail of the template of Figure 1; and Figure 4 shows a cross-section through the template on the line IV-IV of Figure 1 and on an enlarged scale.
Referring now the the drawings, it will be seen that the template is in the form of a rectangular frame generally indicated at 10 and comprised by four side rails 11, 12, 13 and 14 connected by corner members 15, 16, 17 and 18.
Each of the side rails is comprised by a length of square tubular section whilst each of the corner members comprises two limbs 19 and 20 at right angles to one another each of square tubular section and stiffened by a web 21.
The ends of the side rails are slidably and telescopically received within the limbs of the corner members.
Any adjacent pair of corner members may be slid relative to the oppositely disposed side rails with which they connect (for example, corner members 15 and 18 may be moved on rails 13 and 14 and corner members 15 and 16 may be moved on rails 11 and 12) to enable the width and height of the template to be adjusted to required dimensions.
Bolts 22 pass through bores 23 in the side rails and slots 24 in the limbs of the corner members to engage nuts 25, which may be wing nuts to enable the parts to be firmlysecured after adjustment. Enlarged bores 26 and 27 on the back faces of the corner members and side rails facilitate installation of the bolts 22.
The side rails and corner members may be comprised by and fabricated from extrusions of rigid plastics material or aluminium for example.
The templates may be provided in a range of sizes suitable for different size ranges of window, doorway or other commonly encountered constructional aperture.
Channel members may be provided to cover the outer edges of the template to provide straight edges against which bricks of the like can be laid.
Fixture means as indicated at 28 may be provided around the template to permit securing of a sheet of plastics or similar to close the opening through the template to protect the interior of the building in which it is being used from the weather.
Reinforcing cross-braces of telescopically adjustable length may be provided for the larger sizes of template between a pair of opposite side rails.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.
