Description

SPECIFICATION Slide bolt device This invention concerns a slide bolt device adapted to be fitted to a door or window to secure same in a closed position within a surrounding frame.
Conventional slide bolts comprising a bolt member located within a barrel secured to the face of a door or window and adapted to be extended to engage a keeper secured to a surrounding frame are inexpensive yet highly effective security devices. They have however the serious disadvantage of being quite unsightly.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a slide bolt device which overcomes at least to a substantial extent the disadvantage aforesaid.
According to the present invention there is provided a slide bolt device adapted to be fitted within the interior of a door or window and comprising a barrel having an axially extending slot in the wall thereof, a bolt member slidable within the barrel and a stud extending outwardly from the bolt member and through said slot and terminating in handle means which is adapted to be located on the face of the door or window when the device is fitted and which can be actuated to slide the bolt member outwardly of the barrel to engage with a keeper adapted to be fitted within a frame to the door or window.
The outer end of the bolt member may be formed with a radially extending recess, the device also comprising a threaded stud which can be formed by a knob in nut means adapted to be fitted within said frame to pass through an aperture in said keeper to engage said recess to secure said bolt member in its extended position.
There may be a second axially extending slot in said barrel diametrically opposite said first slot and a second stud and handle means adapted to be located on the opposite face of the door or window when the device is fitted enabling operation of the bolt member from either side of the door or window.
The outer end of the bolt member may be formed with a second radially extending recess diametrically opposite said first recess there being a second threaded stud, knob, nut means and aperture in said keeper enabling the bolt member to be secured in its extended position from either side of the door or window.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference from the several figures of the accompanying drawings which show, by way of example only, three embodiments of slide bolt device embodying same.
Of the drawings: Figure 1 shows a cross-section through a first form of device in the plane of the door to which it is fitted; Figure 2 shows a cross-section through the bolt device on the line ll-ll of Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a eross-section through the second form of device in the plane of the door to which it is fitted; Figure 4 shows a cross-section through the bolt device on the line IV-IV of Figure 3; and Figure 5 shows a cross-section similar to that of Figure 4 but of a third form of device.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 and 2, it will be seen that the slide bolt device comprises a cylindrical barrel adapted to be fitted in a bore 11 extended perpendicularly and inwardly from the edge of a door 12. A cylindrical bolt member 14 is slidable within the barrel 10 between a retracted position where it is located wholly within the door 12 and an extended position wherein it engages a cylindrical keeper 15 set into the door frame 16. An axially extending slot 17 is provided in the wall of the barrel 10 and a stud 18 extends outwardly from the bolt member 14 through the slot 17 and a slot 19 cut into the door 12 and a handle 20. The handle 20 may be slid from side to side to move the bolt member 13 between its two positions. A slotted plate 21 is provided which may be screwed to the face of the door to present a neat finish to the slot 19.
The handle 20 may be of any selected design to harmonise with the decor of the room in which the door 12 is located.
This first form of device is particularly suitable for securing a bathroom or toilet door from the outside as a security measure to block an intruder who enters such room through its window. It may also be used for securing such a door from the inside to prevent entry when the room is in use.
Referring now to Figures 3 and 4 it will be seen that the second form of slide bolt device is generally similar to that described with reference to Figures 1 and 2, like parts being numbered with like reference numerals.
In this device, however, a small radially directed blind bore 30 is formed in the end of the bolt member 14. A bore 31 extends through the frame 16 to communicate with an aperture 32 in the wall of the keeper 15. A nut member 33 is let in to the frame 16 and locates a threaded stud 34 terminating in a handle or knob 35 on the outside of the frame 16. When the bolt member 14 has been slid outwardly to engage the keeper 15 the handle or knob 35 may be turned to screw the threaded stud 34 into engagement with the bore 30 and thus secure the bolt and make it difficult for a would-be intruder to retract it even if he should cause considerable damage to the door and frame with a wrecking-bar or similar implement on the side of the door opposite from the handle 20.
This form of device is particularly suited for installation to the back and front doors of a domestic dwelling house.
Turning now to Figure 5, it will be seen that the third form of device is generally similar to that described with reference to Figures 3 and 4, like parts being again numbered with like reference numerals.
In this device, however, a second axial slot 50 is provided in the barrel 14 diametrically opposite the slot 17 to locate a second stud 51 extended outwardly from the bolt member 14 and through a second slot 52 formed on the door 12 and a second handle 53. A second slotted plate 54 is provided to give a neat finish to the-slot 52. It will be understood that bolt member 14 may now be operated from either side of the door. Furthermore a second radial bore 55 is provided in the end of the bolt member 14 diametrically opposite the bore 30. A second bore 56 is provided in the frame 16 and communicates with a second aperture 57 in the well of the keeper 15.
A second nut member 58 is let into the frame 16 and is threadily engaged by a second stud 59 with a further handle or knob 60 to enable the bolt to be secured from either side of the door 12.
This form of device is particularly suited for example, for use with the inter-connecting door between adjacent hotel bedrooms. It is understood that the bolt member 14 can only be retracted to open the door 12 if the securing members on both sides of the door are released.
In a modification there is a single recess extending right through the bolt member 14 whereby one of the threaded studs can be screwed through the entire thickness of the bolt member 14 to prevent the other from being engaged with the bolt member 14 and accidentally locking someone into a room.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.
