Abstract

A sliding bolt 7 is movable via a handle 8 in first tubular member 4 and can project to engage in a second tubular member 5 which functions as a keeper. A lock, eg a key operated barrel lock 10, in the member 5 can engage the bolt to prevent withdrawal. The members 4 and 5 can be mounted via fixing bolts 11 and 14 extending therefrom to the external surfaces of a pair of doors (such as the rear doors of a vehicle) or to a door and frame. To resist attack the members 4, 5 and the bolt 7 can be formed from hardened steel.

Description

Title: Lock For Door The present invention relates to a lock for a door, particularly for vehicles.
Many commercial vehicles such as vans have a double door at the rear. Many such doors are lockable, e. g. with upper and lower bolts on a first door to engage the door frame, and a latch on the first door to engage with the second door. It is relatively easy for a person to prise open the door open using a crowbar. Some vehicle owners try to increase security or lock previously vandalised doors by using a padlock and hasp but again these can be prised off relatively easily.
The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a lock for a door comprising: a) a first tube, b) a second tube, c) a bar to slide in the first tube and to project out of the first tube, said bar having a handle, and d) a lock in the second tube to engage the bar, in use said first and second tubes being mountable on different doors of a pair of door respectively or on a door and door frame respectively such that said bar can slide and be locked in the second tube to lock the doors. The first and second tubes may be cylindrical.
In one embodiment bolts project radially from each tube to secure each tube to a door or door frame. The bolts may pass through apertures in a door or door frame. A backing plate may be provided on the side of the door remote from each tube.
The bar handle may be a radially extending arm which passes through a slot in the first tube.
The lock may be a barrel lock which releasably engages with a recess in the bar.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure I shows a view of the rear of a van with the lock fitted to a pair of doors, Figure 2 shows an exploded view of the lock of Figure 1, and Figure 3 shows a cross section view of the lock of Figure 1.
Referring to Figure I there is shown a lock I mounted on the back of a van 2 to lock the pair of van doors 3A, 3B. Lock I may be used as a security device in addition to or to replace the standard door lock.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3, lock I comprises a first cylindrical tube 4 and a second cylindrical tube 5. Tubes 4 and 5 may be made of hardened steel. Tube 4 has an elongate slot 6.
A cylindrical hardened steel bar 7 is provided to slide in the first tube 4 and to project out of the first tube into the second tube. A handle in the form of arm 8 extends radially from bar 7 and projects through slot 6. Handle 8 is used to slide bar 7. A recess 9 is provided adjacent one end of bar 7.
A key-operated barrel lock 10 is provided in the second tube to releasably engage with the recess 9 on the bar 7.
Tube 4 has three bolts 11A, 11BJ1C extending radially from its circumference. Bolts 11 A, 11 B, 11C pass through apertures in door 3A and are secured to the door 3A by nuts and washers 12A, 12B, 12C. A backing plate 13 may be provided to add strength. Tube 5 also has three bolts 14A, 14B, 14C extending radially from its circumference. Bolts 14A, 14B, 14C pass through apertures in door 3B and are secured to the door 3B by nuts and washers 15A, 15B, 15C.
Again a backing plate 16 may be provided to add strength.
In use to secure the doors 3A, 3B, the bar 7 is located into tube 5, using handle 8 to slide it. The lock 10 is used to lock the bar in tube 5. To open the doors, lock 10 is rotated to disengage it from the recess 9 and bar 7 is withdrawn into tube 4 using handle 8.
It will be appreciated that the lock of the invention will prevent the doors being forced open using a crowbar.
In order to improve the aesthetic look of the lock, the lock could be coated in a plastic or be located inside a plastic housing. Such a plastic coating or housing may be designed to accomodate curves in vehicle doors.
The lock of the invention may be made in a variety of colours to suit different colours of vehicles.
The lock of the invention may be used to secure a single door to a door frame, including hinged doors and sliding doors.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.

Claims (9)

  1. CLAIMS LOCK FOR DOOR 1. A sliding bar locking unit that is fixed to vehicle doors that may provide a visual deterrent against attempted'break-ins', to that vehicle.
  2. 2. A sliding bar locking unit as claimed in claim 1 which is fixed by attached threaded studs to that vehicles doors, secured from the inside of the doors by threaded nuts.
  3. 3. A sliding bar locking unit as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 which is operated by a handle attached to a bar sliding in a slot whereby the handle pushes the bar partially into the second tube thereby securing the vehicle doors and preventing their opening.
  4. 4. A sliding bar locking unit as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 and claim 3 whereby the sliding bar can be locked in position with a releasable lock once the bar has been slid from the first tube to project into the second tube, the said releasable lock being mounted on the second tube.
  5. 5. A sliding bar locking unit mentioned in any proceeding claim that may have the metal components manufactured from a hardened steel.
  6. 6. A sliding bar locking unit mentioned in any proceeding claim that may vary in any dimensions to suit a particular vehicle or other application.
