Abstract

A sliding bolt assembly is a security device which is used extensively for locking both domestic and commercial doors. The sliding bolt "shoot" 3 slides forward and engages with a staple 1 fitted the door jamb. The security of these devices is improved by fitting a locking screw 9, or spring loaded locking pin 10 immediately behind the sliding bolt "shoot" to hold it in the extended position. <IMAGE>

Description

Title: Improvements in and relating to fastening means for doors or the like.
DESChIPTION The present invention relates to an improved fastening means for a door or the like, and in particular to a sliding bolt fastening.
There is an increasing number of occasions when premises are entered by unauthorised persons gaining access by forced entry, and attention has therefore been directed to improving the security of doors by providing more sophisticated locks and additional locks.
The vast n,aJority of home occupiers also take the opportunity to increase the security of their doors by fitting extra internal security bolts, which are commonly known as sliding bolt fastenings.
These security bolts normally consist of a housing,a sliding bolt "shoot" and a security staple. The housing may be of an extruded material such as aluminium or brass,or it may be made as steel fabrication. The sliding bolt "shoot is usually a steel bar with an outwardly projectine portion, which may be in the form of a knob. The securing staple is usually made of similar materials to that previously described for the construction of the sliding bolt housing. Both the housing and the securing staple are therefore made from an aluminium or brass extrusion,or made es a steel fabrication.
The sliding bolt housing assembly is fitted to the surface of the door using four or six screws. The securing staple is fitted to the surface of the door jamb using two screws and is directly in line with the housing assembly. The alignment of the housing assembly and the securing staple allows the sliding bolt "shoot'1 to engage freely when activated by the home occupier.
The problem with this type of security device is that an intruder can open it from outside the house,by removing a small pane of glass in some doors,or making a hole in the door large enough to get his hand through.
It is the aim of the present invention to provide a more secure fastening for a door or the like.
I find that I can provide a more secure fastening simply by fitting a locking screw immediately behind the sliding bolt "shoot This locking screw is submerged into the housing when not in use and the sliding bolt "shoot" travels over the screw without interference. If the home occupier decides to lock the sliding bolt "shoot" when it is engaged with the steple, the person simply retracts the locking screw sufficiently to prevent the sliding bolt "shoot" from travelling its normal distance and thus disengaging.
An alternative to the locking screw is to have a spring loaded securing pin which activates each time the sliding bolt is used, and which has to be pushed down again before the sliding bolt "shoot" can be dis-engaged.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
A typical sliding bolt assembly is illustrated in Fig 1.of the accompanying drawings.
It comprises a securing staple 1.A housing 2.A sliding bolt shoot" 3.and an activating knob 4.
The illustration Fig 2.shows a sliding bolt housing 2. fitted to the door 7.and the securing staple 1.secured to the door jamb 5.by screws 6.
The sliding bolt "shoot" 3. is engaged with the securing staple 1.because the activating knob t.
is in the forward ositior.
The illustration Fig 3. shows the securing staple 1.the housing 2. the sliding bolt "shoot" 3.
the activating knob 4.and the position 8.where the locking screw or spring loaded securing pin would be situated.
The illustration Fig 4.shows the securing staple 1.secured to the door jamb 5.by screws 6.
The housing 2.is fitted to the door 7.by screws (not shown).
The sliding bolt "shoot" 3.is engaged with the securing staple 1.and the locking screw 9.
prevents it from returning to the dis-engaged position.
The illustration Fig 5. shows the securing staple 1.secured to the door jamb 5.by screws 6.
The housing 2.is fitted to the door 7.by screws (not shown).
The sliding bolt "shoot" 3.is engaged with the securing staple 1.The sliding bolt "Shoot" cannot be dis-engaged until the spring loaded pin 10.is pushed down, and the spring 11,to compressed in the container 12.

Claims (2)

1. A Sliding Bolt Assembly which has a locking screw immediately behind the Sliding Bolt "Shoot" and which can be activated to retain the "Shoot" in the forward position.
2. A Sliding Bolt Assembly which has n string loaded locking pin immediately behind the Sliding Bolt "Shoot" and which is activated when the "Shoot" is moved into the forward position.
