Abstract

July 17, 1923. sparking-preventing in small knife-blade type switches such as are used, for example in electric pre-payment meters is effected by an electromagnet mounted on the movable contact blade member and introduced into the main circuit by means of auxiliary contacts on the blade member at the moment of break only. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, a pivoted sector d of insulating material has main and auxiliary flush contacts c, c<1>, the main contact being in the form of a U so that, in the dotted position shown, it will bridge the two parallel contacts, a, a<1> and complete the main circuits. The auxiliary contacts c<1> one on either side of the sector are connected with a coil g located on the edge of the sector and held in place by an iron set screw f<1> which constitutes the core of the coil. In breaking the circuit, the main contacts c leave the fixed contacts first, but the circuit remains completed momentarily through the blow-out coil which is thus effective only when required. In a modified arrangement Fig. 6, an auxiliary contact c' on one side only of the sector is employed, the main contact c being extended on the other side to serve also as an auxiliary contact.
