A sling for assisting in the removal of a spare wheel (3) from its housing (2) comprising a Y-shaped strap (5) two limbs of which are attached at their ends to support hooks (6) positioned above the housing (2) and the other end (10) of which is free, the strap (5) being of sufficient length to extend down into one side of the housing (2), across a base of the housing (2) and up out of the opposite side of the housing (2) so that, a wheel (3) located in the housing can be lifted at least part way out of the housing (2) by pulling on the free end (10) of the strap (5) in the direction of arrow A. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for assisting in the removal of a spare wheel from its housing This invention relates to apparatus for assisting in the removal of a spare wheel from its housing.
A spare wheel housed in a recess in the floor of a luggage compartment of a vehicle is often difficult to remove as it is relatively heavy and is not easy to reach.
According to this invention there is provided apparatus for assisting in the removal of a spare wheel from its housing comprising a strap which is attached at one end to a support positioned above a wheel housing and the other end of which is free, the strap being of sufficient length to extend down into one side of the housing, across a base of the housing and up out of the opposite side of the housing whereby, in use, a wheel located in the housing can be lifted at least part way out of the housing by pulling on the free end of the strap.
Preferred features of this invention will become apparent from the subordinate claims of the specification.
This invention will now be illustrated, merely by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic drawing showing one embodiment of apparatus according to this invention and a spare wheel located in a housing in a vehicle luggage compartment; and Figure 2 is a schematic drawing showing the apparatus of Figure 1 being used to assist in the removal of the spare wheel.
Figure 1 shows a vehicle luggage compartment 1 having a recess 2 in the floor thereof which forms the housing of a spare wheel 3. The luggage compartment is closed by a boot lid 4. A strap 5 is attached by means of loops (not shown) to support hooks 6 provided on the underside of a rear parcel shelf 7. The strap 4 extends down the rear wall 8 of the luggage compartment, which may form part of a rear seat back support 9, and down into one side of the recess 2, under the wheel 3 and across the base of the recess 2, and back up the opposite side of the recess 2. A loop 10 which acts as a handle is provided at the free end of the strap and this lies on top of the wheel 3 where it is readily accessible. The spare wheel is covered by a carpet 11.
To lift the spare wheel 3 from the recess 2, the boot lid 4 is opened, the carpet 11 is removed and the loop 10 is pulled out of the luggage compartment in the direction of arrow A shown in Figure 2.
This lifts the rear edge of the wheel 3 out of the recess 2 and the wheel 3 pivots about the support hooks 6 as shown by the arrow B and swings towards the open side of the luggage compartment 1. From the position shown in Figure 2, the wheel 3 can be easily lifted out of the luggage compartment 1.
The strap 5 preferably comprises 3 limbs arranged in a Y-shape. Two of the limbs 5A and 5B are each attached to support hooks 6 as shown in Figure 1, one on each end of the parcel shelf 7.
These two limbs extend down into the recess and join with the third limb 5C of the strap 5 underneath the wheel 3, the third limb 5C extending back up the opposite side of the recess 2 and terminating in a loop 10 as shown in the Figures. The two limbs 5A and 5B attached to the hooks 6 are preferably arranged at an angle of about 45" to each other so that the wheel 3 is cradled between them as it is lifted out of the recess 2. The strap 5 is preferably made of polyester and may be about 25 mm wide. The type of strap typically used for seat belts is particularly suitable.
The strap 5 may, of course, be attached to support hooks positioned elsewhere in the luggage compartment but the hooks should be at a level above the recess 2 so that the wheel is at least partly supported by the straps attached to the hooks and pivots about the hooks as the free end of the strap is pulled in the direction of arrow A.

Apparatus for assisting in the removal of a spare wheel from its housing comprising a strap which is attached at one end to a support positioned above a wheel housing and the other end of which is free, the strap being of sufficient length to extend down into one side of the housing, across a base of the housing and up out of the opposite side of the housing whereby, in use, a wheel located in the housing can be lifted at least part way out of the housing by pulling on the free end of the strap.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which the strap comprises three limbs joined in a Y-shape, two of the limbs being attached at the ends to separate supports positioned above the housing, and the third limb forming the free end of the strap.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 2 in which the limbs are of a length such that they are joined to each other at a point which, in use, lies on the base of the housing.
4. Apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim in which the housing is a recess provided in a luggage compartment of a vehicle.
5. Apparatus as claimed in claim 4 which is arranged so that, in use, when the free end of the strap is pulled, the wheel is lifted at least part way out of the recess by pivoting about the or each support towards an open side of the luggage compartment.
6. Apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim in which a wheel is positioned within the housing, the strap passing under the wheel and back up out of the housing so that the free end of the strap is accessible from above the wheel.
7. Apparatus for assisting in the removal of a spare wheel from its housing substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
