Abstract

214,537. Maclure, G. M. Aug. 31, 1923. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Channels in tappets.-Lubricant is supplied to a conduit 15 'in a tappet rod 3 of an internalcombustion engine for lubricating the joint between the rod 3 and a rocking arm 2 operating a valve stem 1, from a recess 11 in the tappet guide 13 which registers with transverse apertures 12 in the tappet 4. The ball end 8 of the rod engages a socket formed in a plunger 9 in a bore in the tappet, the plunger having a reduced lower portion 10. A slight clearance is left between the reduced portion 10 and the bottom of the bore in the tappet, so that lubricant supplied under pressure to the recess 11 passes through the apertures 12 and under the plunger to the conduit 15 when the tappet is in its lowest position. The plunger may be dispensed with, in which case the apertures 12 communicate directly with the conduit 15. The lubricant serves also to lubricate the tappet guide and the connection between the tappet and the tappet rod.
