Abstract

214,423. Moody, L. F. March 23, 1923. Blades, vanes, nozzles, and the like ; regulating ; radial-flow type; combined flow-type; working-fluid supply.-In a high speed hydraulic impulse, turbine of the radial flow type the jet of water supplied to the rotor buckets B', Fig. 4, is in the form of an unbroken ring J, the water flowing through a volute casing 14 having guide vanes V, V<1> and and annular discharge orifice 12 adapted to be throttled by an annular plunger' 12'. Rotor buckets B shown in section in Fig. 3 extend between the hub and a shroud ring or may be spaced from the hub as shown at 37, Fig. 4, and may be cut away at their receiving edges. The casing is entirely enclosed and the pressure against which the jet discharges is controlled by valves 22, 31. The guide vanes V<1> may be adjustable. The buckets are inclined to the radial in the direction of rotation. A deflector D is provided which may be raised to by-pass some of the water flowing to the buckets. In a modification, the water flows through inclined guide vanes 49, Fig. 6, and an adjustable nozzle 50 on to outward flow buckets b discharging into an airtight casing 55 which is connected with the tailwater and in which the pressure is controlled. The rotor may be provided with an auxiliary cover 52. In a further modification the upper half of the annular nozzle of an outward flow turbine is mounted on a vertical rod fixed to a pressure-operated piston for adjusting the nozzle. A deflector between the nozzle and the buckets is operated from a fluid-pressure cylinder.
