Abstract

A plurality of interconnectable extruded members 1 of metal or plastics material for use in making floor mats each comprising a base 2 with a continuous first hinge formation 3 along one edge thereof and a continuous second hinge formation 4 along an opposite edge thereof capable of cooperating with the first hinge formation of an adjoining member so that the members are interconnected with their bases aligned, a recess 17 on one side of the base 2 adjacent the first hinge formation and facing the second hinge formation and a clamping arm extending outwardly of the first hinge formation so as to overlap the one side of the base of an adjoining interconnected member, the arrangement being such that a strip 23 of carpet, rubber or plastics material of appropriate dimensions may be disposed on the base with its one edge extending into and retained by the recess and its opposite edge clamped against the base by the arm of an adjoining member. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Extruded members This invention relates to interconnectable extruded members of metal or plastics material which are particularly useful for making floor mats but which may also be used for a variety of other purposes.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a plurality of interconnectable extruded members of metal or plastics material each comprising a base with a continuous first hinge formation along one edge thereof and a continuous second hinge formation along an opposite edge thereof capable of cooperating with the first hinge formation of an adjoining member so thatthe members are interconnected with their bases aligned, a recess on one side of the base adjacent the first hinge formation and facing the second hingeformation and a clamping arm extending outwardly of the first hinge formation so as to overlap the one side of the base of an adjoining interconnected member, the arrangement being such that a strip of appropriate dimensions may be disposed on the base with its one edge extending into and retained by the recess and its opposite edge clamped againstthe base by the arm of an adjoining member.
The above and other aspects of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is asecond perspective view ofthree interconnected members according to the present invention with one disposition of strips and Figure 2 is a similar view of two ofthe members of Figure 1 turned upside down with a different disposition of strips.
Referring to Figure 1 each member 1 comprises a flat base 2 having afirstcontinuous hinge formation 3 along one edge and a second continuous hinge formation 4 along its opposite edge.
Each hinge member3 is hollow and comprises a platform 5, an arcuatewall 6 extending between the platform 5 and a top plate 7 and a pair of lips 8 and 9 defining therebetween an opening 10. Each hinge member4 comprises an arcuate member 11 with a foot 12 and a pair of stops 13 and 14. The foot 12 is of such dimension that it cannot pass through the opening 10 so thatfor interconnection the members must be joined together by sliding from their ends.
The top plate 7 has an edge part 15 which overlaps the base 2 of an interconnected member 1 and inwardly of this edge part it is formed with a re-entrant recess 16. Between the base 2 and the top plate 7 each member is formed with a recess 17 with its opening facing the second hinge formation ofthe same member.
The platform 5 is formed with a re-entrant recess 18 and is extended beyond this recess to provide a lip 19 sothat a recess 20 is provided on the opposite side of the base 1 from the recess 16. The stop 14 is also extended from a lip 21 so that a recess 22, facing the recess 20 is provided.
In practice, to form a mat, a multiplicity of members are connected together and strips 23 of appropriate 5 width and thickness are disposed with their one edge extending within the recesses 17 and their opposite edges trapped beneath the edge parts 15 ofthetop plate 7. Itwill be understood, as shown in Figure 1,that each member may pivot throug h just over 90 relative to adjoining members to permit insertion of the strips 23 and also so that the assembled mat may be rolled up.
The strips 23 may be of carpet, rubber or plastics material and the use of individual strips enables different combinations of colour and texture to be provided so that individual mats may have have a distinctive and pleasing appearance.
As shown in Figure 2 the mat can be reversed and different strips 24 located on the other side of the bases 2 and held between the recesses 20 and 22.
The re-entrant recesses 16 and 18 may house soft rubber or plastics members 25 which, below the mat, may constitute "feet" to accommodate uneven floor ing and, above the mat, may contribute to the tread pattern.
CLAIMS: (Filed on 25/11/83) 1. Plurality of interconnectable extruded mem bers of metal or plastics material each comprising a base with a continuous first hingeformation along one edgethereofand a continuous second hinge formation along an opposite edge thereof capable of cooperating with the first hinge formation of an adjoining member so that the members are intercon nected with their bases aligned, a recess on one side of the base adjacentthefirst hinge formation and facing the second hinge formation and a clamping arm extending outwardlyofthefirst hinge formation so as to overlap the one side of the base of an adjoining interconnected member,thearrangement being such that a strip of appropriate dimensions may be disposed on the base with its one edge extending into and retained by the recess and its opposite edge clampedagainstthe base byte arm of an adjoining member.
2. Members according to claim 1 in which each first hinge formation is hollow and comprises a platform, an arcuate wall extending between the platform an a top plate, a lip on the platform extending towards the top plate and an opening between the top plate and the lip.
3. Members according to claim 2 in which each second hinge formation comprises an arcuate mem ber and a foot for disposal within the hollow first hinge formatibn, the foot being of such dimension that it cannot pass through the opening.
4. Members according to any one ofthe preceding claims in which the clamping arm comprises part of the top plate.
5. Member substantially as herein described with reference to Fig 1 or Fig 1 and Fig 2 ofthe accompanying drawing.

    SPECIFICATION Extruded members This invention relates to interconnectable extruded members of metal or plastics material which are particularly useful for making floor mats but which may also be used for a variety of other purposes.
    According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a plurality of interconnectable extruded members of metal or plastics material each comprising a base with a continuous first hinge formation along one edge thereof and a continuous second hinge formation along an opposite edge thereof capable of cooperating with the first hinge formation of an adjoining member so thatthe members are interconnected with their bases aligned, a recess on one side of the base adjacent the first hinge formation and facing the second hingeformation and a clamping arm extending outwardly of the first hinge formation so as to overlap the one side of the base of an adjoining interconnected member, the arrangement being such that a strip of appropriate dimensions may be disposed on the base with its one edge extending into and retained by the recess and its opposite edge clamped againstthe base by the arm of an adjoining member.
    The above and other aspects of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is asecond perspective view ofthree interconnected members according to the present invention with one disposition of strips and Figure 2 is a similar view of two ofthe members of Figure 1 turned upside down with a different disposition of strips.
    Referring to Figure 1 each member 1 comprises a flat base 2 having afirstcontinuous hinge formation 3 along one edge and a second continuous hinge formation 4 along its opposite edge.
    Each hinge member3 is hollow and comprises a platform 5, an arcuatewall 6 extending between the platform 5 and a top plate 7 and a pair of lips 8 and 9 defining therebetween an opening 10. Each hinge member4 comprises an arcuate member 11 with a foot 12 and a pair of stops 13 and 14. The foot 12 is of such dimension that it cannot pass through the opening 10 so thatfor interconnection the members must be joined together by sliding from their ends.
    The top plate 7 has an edge part 15 which overlaps the base 2 of an interconnected member 1 and inwardly of this edge part it is formed with a re-entrant recess 16. Between the base 2 and the top plate 7 each member is formed with a recess 17 with its opening facing the second hinge formation ofthe same member.
    The platform 5 is formed with a re-entrant recess 18 and is extended beyond this recess to provide a lip 19 sothat a recess 20 is provided on the opposite side of the base 1 from the recess 16. The stop 14 is also extended from a lip 21 so that a recess 22, facing the recess 20 is provided.
    In practice, to form a mat, a multiplicity of members are connected together and strips 23 of appropriate 5 width and thickness are disposed with their one edge extending within the recesses 17 and their opposite edges trapped beneath the edge parts 15 ofthetop plate 7.     The strips 23 may be of carpet, rubber or plastics material and the use of individual strips enables different combinations of colour and texture to be provided so that individual mats may have have a distinctive and pleasing appearance.
    As shown in Figure 2 the mat can be reversed and different strips 24 located on the other side of the bases 2 and held between the recesses 20 and 22.

  2. 2. Members according to claim 1 in which each first hinge formation is hollow and comprises a platform, an arcuate wall extending between the platform an a top plate, a lip on the platform extending towards the top plate and an opening between the top plate and the lip.
  3. 3. Members according to claim 2 in which each second hinge formation comprises an arcuate mem ber and a foot for disposal within the hollow first hinge formatibn, the foot being of such dimension that it cannot pass through the opening.
  4. 4. Members according to any one ofthe preceding claims in which the clamping arm comprises part of the top plate.
  5. 5. Member substantially as herein described with reference to Fig 1 or Fig 1 and Fig 2 ofthe accompanying drawing.
