Abstract

210,930. Gill, J. H. W. Dec. 14, 1922. Propelling, steering, and manoeuvring by water jets.-Water jet propulsion apparatus for ships in which a rotatable nozzle with curved outlet passages is disposed in the pump discharge passage is provided with a number of vanes in the outlet passage. The pump may be placed over the intake and' coupled by a curved pipe to the discharge nozzle. Two wells A, B are mounted in the bottom of a ship and contain the pump C and rotatable nozzle D respectively. A pipe E connects the two wells and has stuffing- boxes F, G, through which pass the pump and nozzle spindles H, J. The manoeuvring nozzle D has an upper flange N' which contacts with adjustable thrust rollers P, whilst the spindle J takes the weight through a collar R and ball bearings R'. Inside the nozzle, are disposed a number of transverse vanes T which serve to direct water without shock into the required direction. Flanges U fit closely in the well B and form a labyrinth packing therewith. For steering the nozzle is rotated by a tiller or crank on the spindle J.
