Abstract

In a device for gripping and transferring products (2) operating in a wrapping machine, product gripping means (7) are fitted at their ends for gripping the products with resilient elements or pads (9) within which at least one cavity (10) is formed. Such a cavity increases the deformability of the resilient elements, and assures an effective and smooth adherence thereof to the product contours. A resilient member such as a helical spring may be accommodated with the each cavity to improve the grip of the product. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A device for gripping and transferring products in a wrapping machine This invention relates to a device for gripping and transferring products in a wrapping machine, and more particularly is concerned with a device for safely, but delicately, gripping and transferring fragile or easily deformable products.
The present device can be usefully applied in the field of the confectionary industry, and particularly in machines for wrapping in paper delicate products, such as sugar-drops, sticks of sugar-drops, chocolates, tablets of chocolate or similar articles. In such machines, the transfer of the products is normally carried out by gripping members comprising pliers or assemblies including pushers and counterpushers provided with reciprocating motion.
At the zones of direct contact with the products, such gripping members are usually provided with pads made of rubber or similar resilient material, designed to assure the safest and most delicate grip of the products possible.
However, such a goal is hardly ever attained in satisfactory manner under all conditions, as it has been found that the use of relatively rigid pads does not always allow gripping of the products with sufficient delicacy and adequate surface contact, particularly in the case of products having curved surfaces.
If, on one hand, the use of very soft pads, made of soft porous rubber, is advantageous for such products, on the other hand it requires frequent replacement of the pads due to their rapid wear.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a gripping device of the aforesaid type, in which the pads have excellent characterstics of duration together with the capability of delicate grip of products of any shape.
According to the invention, this and further objects are accomplished by a device for gripping and transferring products in a wrapping machine, comprising gripping means for gripping said products provided at the ends for gripping said products with resilient elements, in which at least one of said resilient elements has at least one inner cavity.
Further characteristics and advantages of the device according to the present invention will become more clearly apparent from the following detailed description of some preferred embodiments thereof, shown by way of unrestrictive example in the Figs. of the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side view showing a first gripping device according to the invention; Figure 2 is a sectional view of the gripping device taken along line ll-ll of Fig. 1; and Figure 3 is a diagrammatic side view showing a second gripping device according to the invention.
Referring to Fig. 1, reference numeral 1 designates as a whole a wheel for the transfer and wrapping of products 2, forming part of a wrapping machine, (not shown).
Such a wheel 1 comprises a disc element 3, coaxially carried by a shaft 4 having a horizontal axis and intermittently rotatably driven by drive means (not shown).
The periphery of the disc element 3 is pierced by a number of pins 5 parallel to the shaft 4, on which pins respective arms 6 are pivoted at one end, the arms projecting substantially radially to the outside of the wheel 1.
Pairs of arms 6 form part of gripping pliers for the products 2, indicated as a whole at 7 and angularly equally spaced apart from one another.
By means of dovetail couplings or joints, the two arms 6 of each pliers 7 support, at the respective free ends, pads, or resilient elements 9.
Each pad 9 is made of rubber or similar resilient material and has a cavity 10 running therethrough in a direction parallel to the shaft 4.
Actuating means (not shown, but well known) provide for opening and closing the pliers 7, causing suitable oscillations of the arms 6 about the relative pins 5, whenever a product 2 has to be received by the pliers 7 or removed therefrom.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each of the pliers 7 are capable of receiving and supporting, in the course of the wrapping operations, between the two pads 9 a product 2 and a respective small wrapping sheet 11, supplied to the wheel 1 in a known manner by means not shown. It can clearly be seen that that particular structure of the pads 9 makes their gripping walls 1 2 substantially deformable in accordance with the contours of the products 2.
As shown in Fig. 3, the above described pads can also be used in assemblies in which the gripping means comprise pushers and counterpushers provided with rectilinear motion.
More particularly, reference numeral 1 3 designates a pusher element comprising a shaft 14, the latter having a plate 1 5 secured perpendicularly to one end thereof.
By means of a dovetail coupling or joint 16, this plate 1 5 carries a pad 1 7 in one cavity 1 8 of which at least one resilient member or helical spring 20, parallel to the shaft 14, is inserted, in order to improve the adherence between the gripping wall 1 9 and product 2.
This spring 20 acts on the wall 1 9 with such a force as not to jeopardize the shape adaptability of the pad 17, while assuring a correct resilient return of the wall 1 9 at each release of a product 2, even when, as a result of prolonged use, there would occur a decay in the elasticity characteristics of the material of the pad 17.
A counter-pusher element 21 is disposed in axial alignment with the pusher element 1 3 and comprises a shaft 22, while a plate 23 is integral with one end thereof, this plate supporting a conventional type of pad 24 made of resilient material.
The described combination of a pad 1 7 provided with a cavity 1 8 and a pad 24 without such a cavity can assure a sufficiently safe gripping of the products 2 in all cases in which, as in the example of Fig. 3, the products 2 during transfer thereof are not subjected to centrifugal force or any other stresses capable of altering their position.
Of course, many changes or modifications coutd be made to the described gripping and transferring device without departing from the basic principle of the invention.
For instance, the cavity could be provided in the pads 9 or 1 7 in different directions from that shown in order to allow, as the case may be, a better adaptation of the walls 1 2 or 1 9 to the shape of the products 2.
Moreover, particuarly in the case where the device is intended to operate on products of relatively large dimensions, a number of cavities distinct from one another can be provided within the pads 9 or 17.
