Abstract

207,879. Hayward, T. A. Sept. 7, 1922. Cupping.-Cup-shaped articles of half barrel form or with straight bevelled walls are made from sheet metal in two or more stages, one directly following another to make the process continuous, by telescopic dies which first draw a cup and then press it into its final form. The metal disc 4, Fig. 2, is first held in a recess 3 by a fluid operated ring 6, then drawn into the upper part 5 of the die 1 by a fluid operated sleeve 8 and finally past a shoulder 26 into lower part of the same die by a punch built up of pivoted sectors 10 which collapse against the action of a spring 24 and plunger 15. The sectors are held by a screw cap 12 and have tongues 17, 18 to engage guiding grooves in the plunger 15 and a spring held plate 20 which may serve to give the desired form to the bottom of the cup. Each sector is formed with interengaging projections 13, Fig. 9, and recesses 14 on opposite sides. The fluid which operates the sleeve 8 enters by a port 25 and acts upon a plunger 9 which carries the collapsable punch. After the parts are returned the cup is removed from the die 1 if necessary by a fluid-operated ejector 22. In a modification the sections 28, Figs. 4 and 5, of the collapsable punch slide radially.
