Abstract

207,764. Ingram, H. July 17, 1923. Vacuum closures; closures completed by outstanding packing -rings; packing-rings for stoppers. -A side-seal closure for jars, tumblers, &c. comprises a cap 10 formed of thin, flexible, tender material, such as thin sheet aluminium, and provided with a depending skirt 21 formed with an annular recess 22, a metal reinforcing disc 12 applied within the cap and extending over the lip of the jar 13, and a gasket 11 located within the recess 22 and adapted to engage the wall thereof, the under surface of the outer portion of the disc 12, and the wall of the jar. To secure this engagement, a portion 24 of the wall of the recess is downwardly and inwardly set so that the gasket 11, as shown in Fig. 2, projects into the path of the vessel during closuring. The closure is removed by pulling tear-off tabs 23, formed integral with the skirt 21 or otherwise, the tabs being spun beneath the shoulder 15 of the jar where such is provided.
