400,770. Turning-gear. SCINTILLA AKT.-GES., Solothurn, Switzerland. Oct. 22, 1932, No. 29541. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1931. [Class 7 (v).] An electric starting motor is provided with a pinion a engaging keyways on a shaft c, which is driven from the motor through an overrunning clutch d and is displaced axially, to engage the pinion with the engine flywheel b, by a lever g and a sliding member e engaging a grooved collar f on the shaft c. A spring m between the pinion and the collar f is compressed if the teeth of the pinion clash with those of the flywheel ; the motor is then switched on by an arm h of the lever g and when the rotation of the shaft c has brought the teeth into register, the pinion is moved into mesh with the flywheel by the spring m, which displaces only the small mass of the pinion. The meshing movement is cushioned by a spring k. In modifications, (1) meshing is effected by movement of the shaft c and pinion a towards the motor ; (2) the shaft c extend axially through the armature, the lever g and pinion a being at opposite ends of the armature and meshing being effected by movement either away from or towards the motor.
