Abstract
The invention discloses an impression cylinder having a printing blanket secured thereto e.g. by adhesive. The end sections 6 of the blanket each have at least a part of the substructure, for example base plies and intermediate plies immediately adjacent thereto, removed therefrom. Preferably, each end section 6 below the cover layer, is formed of rubber or rubber-like material having at least one reinforcing ply. The end sections 6 are secured to one another by adhesion. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Impression cylinder having a printing blanket secured thereto
The present invention relates to an impression cylinder having a printing blanket secured thereto by adhesion or the like, in which the printing blanket extends around the surface of the cylinder by more than 360 and the upper, free end of the printing blanket faces in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the cylinder. Such arrangement is described and claimed in our co-pending application No. 8007416.
In a preferred embodiment of such arrangement the printing blanket extends around the surface of the cylinder by about 720 .
A printing blanket so fashioned, however, has the disadvantage that it has to be relatively long or relatively thin to enable the doubling caused by the aforesaid mounting of the printing blanket to be effected.
It is an object of the present invention, whilst maintaining the advantages proposed by such above described arrangement, to utilise a printing blanket which is only slightly longer than the external diameter of the impression or printing cylinder to be covered.
According to the present invention there is provided an impression cylinder having a printing blanket secured thereto by adhesion or the like, in which the printing blanket extends around the surface of the cylinder by more than 360 and the upper, free end of the printing blanket faces in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the cylinder, in which the upper and the lower free ends of the printing blanket are in the form of end sections from which at least a part of the substructure has been removed.
It is hence important that the cover layer or panel of both printing blanket sections is retained and by removal of a part or the entire substructure an overlap of the printing blanket sections is brought about. Preferably, however, each printing blanket section, in addition to the said cover panel, retains one fabric reinforcing ply.
The present invention will be further illustrated, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section of the two ends of a printing blanket prepared for forming the joint for adhesive mounting on a cylinder; and
Figure 2 shows the completed joining of the two ends on the cylinder, seen in the axial direction of the cylinder.
A printing blanket made substantially of rubber or rubber-like materials is provided with reinforcing plies in the form of fabric plies 1, 2, 3, has a cover layer 4 of rubberlike material and an adhesive film 5 on its underside. Intermediate rubber plies are located between the fabric plies 1, 2 and 3, which intermediate plies, like layer 4 and film 5, are adhesively connected to the fabric plies 1,2 and 3.
The end sections 6 of the printing blanket to be joined together are both freed on their underside, over a length of from 1 to 2 cm, from fabric plies 1 and 2 and the intermediate plies immediately adjacent thereto, so that over said length only the cover layer 4 and fabric ply 3 remains. Such removal of plies 1 and 2 and associated intermediate plies may be carried out in known manner by mechanical undoing and severing.
The printing blanket so prepared is laid in accordance with Fig. 2 after the underside of the fabric ply 3 at each end 6 has been made adhesive. The end section 6 facing the direction of rotation 7 of the cylinder is adhesively secured to the cylinder, whilst the end section 6 facing in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the cylinder is secured to the other end section 6 already located on the cylinder by adhesion.
During the preparation of the end sections, it is particularly preferred that only slightly more than half the wall thickness is removed or that the end section 6 remaining has a wall thickness which is slightly less than half the wall thickness of the whole printing blanket.
Each end section 6 should preferably contain a reinforcing member, e.g. the said fabric ply 3 whereby it should be established that in the region of the overlap point of the end sections 6, it is quite possible to provide a slight depression relative to the other cylinder sections. A relatively thin overlap point thus provides no greater technological disadvantages.
An impression cylinder having a printing blanket secured thereto by adhesion or the like, in which the printing blanket extends around the surface of the cylinder by more than 360 and the upper, free end of the printing blanket faces in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the cylinder, in which the upper and lower free ends of the printing blanket are in the form of end sections from which at least a part of the substructure has been removed.
2. An impression cylinder having a printing blanket secured thereto, in which each end section below a cover layer is comprised of rubber or rubber-like material having at least one reinforcing ply.
3. An impression cylinder having a printing blanket secured thereto as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which the end sections are secured to each other by adhesion.
4. An impression cylinder having a printing blanket secured thereto, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Such arrangement is described and claimed in our co-pending application No. 8007416.In a preferred embodiment of such arrangement the printing blanket extends around the surface of the cylinder by about 720 .A printing blanket so fashioned, however, has the disadvantage that it has to be relatively long or relatively thin to enable the doubling caused by the aforesaid mounting of the printing blanket to be effected. It is an object of the present invention, whilst maintaining the advantages proposed by such above described arrangement, to utilise a printing blanket which is only slightly longer than the external diameter of the impression or printing cylinder to be covered.According to the present invention there is provided an impression cylinder having a printing blanket secured thereto by adhesion or the like, in which the printing blanket extends around the surface of the cylinder by more than 360 and the upper, free end of the printing blanket faces in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the cylinder, in which the upper and the lower free ends of the printing blanket are in the form of end sections from which at least a part of the substructure has been removed. It is hence important that the cover layer or panel of both printing blanket sections is retained and by removal of a part or the entire substructure an overlap of the printing blanket sections is brought about. Intermediate rubber plies are located between the fabric plies 1, 2 and 3, which intermediate plies, like layer 4 and film 5, are adhesively connected to the fabric plies 1,2 and 3.The end sections 6 of the printing blanket to be joined together are both freed on their underside, over a length of from 1 to 2 cm, from fabric plies 1 and 2 and the intermediate plies immediately adjacent thereto, so that over said length only the cover layer 4 and fabric ply 3 remains. Such removal of plies 1 and 2 and associated intermediate plies may be carried out in known manner by mechanical undoing and severing. The printing blanket so prepared is laid in accordance with Fig. 2 after the underside of the fabric ply 3 at each end 6 has been made adhesive. The end section 6 facing the direction of rotation 7 of the cylinder is adhesively secured to the cylinder, whilst the end section 6 facing in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the cylinder is secured to the other end section 6 already located on the cylinder by adhesion.During the preparation of the end sections, it is particularly preferred that only slightly more than half the wall thickness is removed or that the end section 6 remaining has a wall thickness which is slightly less than half the wall thickness of the whole printing blanket. Each end section 6 should preferably contain a reinforcing member, e.g. the said fabric ply 3 whereby it should be established that in the region of the overlap point of the end sections 6, it is quite possible to provide a slight depression relative to the other cylinder sections. - 2. An impression cylinder having a printing blanket secured thereto, in which each end section below a cover layer is comprised of rubber or rubber-like material having at least one reinforcing ply.
- 3. An impression cylinder having a printing blanket secured thereto as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which the end sections are secured to each other by adhesion.
- 4. An impression cylinder having a printing blanket secured thereto, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
