Abstract

An I-beam rail 10 is attached to a tall building 2 with its web 11 vertical. The mobile apparatus has rollers 31 running on the lower flanges of the rail 10 and at least one further roller 41 engaging the web 11 to ensure correct stress distribution. The ladder 60 is supported by a pair of stirrups 50. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Support system This invention relates to a support system for a window cleaning access ladder.
According to the. present invention there is provided a support system for a window cleaning access ladder comprising a rail for attachment to a building, the rail presenting a pair of horizontal running surfaces and a vertical running surface intermediate said horizontal running surfaces, a main body having at least one pair of rollers for engaging said horizontal running surfaces and at least one roller for contacting said vertical running surface, and ladder support means fixed to said main body.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an end elevational view of one embodiment of a support made in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is a side view taken along the line A-A of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, a support system for a window cleaning access ladder is shown generally at 1. The system includes a rail 10 in the form of an I-beam and attached to a building or like structure 2 with its web 11 vertical. Thus, the rail 10 presents a pair of horizontal running surfaces 1 2 and 1 3 and a vertical running surface 14. The rail 10 runs round the complete building and a separate rail may be provided at each floor.
A main body 20 of the support system 1 comprises a pair of flanges 21, 22 spaced by means of spacer tubes 23 and bolted together by means of bolts 24 passing through apertures 25 in the flanges 21, 22. Each of the flanges has four axles 30 rotatably mounted thereon, each axle 30 carrying a roller 31 for engaging a respective one of the horizontal running surfaces 1 2 and 1 3. One of the axles 30 is provided with a sprocket wheel 32 whereby the main body may be caused to move along the rail 10.
intermediate two adjacent rollers 31 there is provided a horizontal bracket 40 carrying a vertical axle 42 on which there is rotatably mounted a roller 41 for engaging the said vertical surface 1 4 of the rail 1 0. The interaction of the roller 41 and surface 14 ensures correct stress distribution within the system.
Ladder support means in the form of a pair of stirrup members 50 support a ladder 60 by means of a bolt assembly 52.
Thus there has been provided a simple, inexpensive support system for a window cleaning access ladder whereby the windows of multistorey buildings may be cleaned safely. The simple construction of the support system allows the ladder to traverse the face of the building with a minimum of effort.
Modifications and improvements may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention.
1. A support system for a window cleaning access ladder comprising a rail for attachment to a building, the rail presenting a pair of horizontal running surfaces and a vertical running surface intermediate said horizontal running surfaces, a main body having at least one pair of rollers for engaging said horizontal running surface and at least one roller for contacting said vertical running surface, and ladder support means fixed to said main body.
2. A support system as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the rail is an I-beam forming the vertical running surface.
3. A support system as claimed in either preceding claim, wherein the main body is a fabrication including a pair of flanges bolted together.
4. A support system as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the number of pairs of rollers for engaging the horizontal running surface is four.
5. A support system as claimed in Claim 4, wherein the number of rollers contacting said vertical running surface is three.
6. A support system as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the ladder support means is in the form of a pair of stirrups attached to said main body.
7. A support system for a window cleaning access ladder substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
