Abstract

204,512. Shanks, C. F. Sept. 13, 1922. Clutches, friction; reversing-gearing.- In reversing-gearing controlled by electromagnetic clutches, two coaxial armatures co-operate with stationary electro-magnets and are connected by transmission gearing including friction elements for rotating a driven shaft, the magnets being mounted on the ends of a casing housing the shaft and gearing. Electromagnets 3, 3a mounted on the casing 2 co-operate with armature 1, 1<a> free on the driven shaft 4. The armature 1 is driven from a pulley &c. 5 and drives the armature 1<a> reversely at reduced speed through toothed discs 7, 8, gearing 9 - - 13, and toothed discs 8<a>, 7a. The discs 7, 8, 7a, 8<a> are provided with friction faces 14, 15, 14a, 15a co-operating with discs 16, 16<a> fixed on the shaft 4, which has axial freedom and is held central by springs 17, 17<a> when both magnets are deenergized. Energization of the magnet 3 causes engagement of the clutch 7, 16, 8 in successive opposition to the springs 17, 17<a> for direct drive; energization of the magnet 3<a> similarly produces geared reverse drive of the shaft 4 through the clutch 7a, 16<a>, 8<a>. The members 8, 8<a> are axially adjustable for wear during running by hand-actuated worms 21, 21<a>, which engage toothed nuts adapted to shift non-rotatable screwed sleeves (not shown) mounted on the bosses 18, 18a of the discs 8, 8<a>. The casing 2 contains cooling and lubricating oil.
