Description
SPECIFICATION
Machine for Processing Harvested Material
The invention relates to a machine for processing harvested crops or material such as a chaff cutter having a device for picking-up the harvested material which has been deposited on the ground, a screw conveyor which gathers the material harvested into a swathe of lesser width, feed means, a chaff cutting or other processing device and a device for detecting foreign bodies contained in the harvested material by means of an adjusting or control signal which interrupts the advance of the harvested material to the chaff cutting members.
Chaff cutters are known which contain a device to detect metal parts picked up with the crop. The device is located in the region of the feed rollers, thus directly in front of the chaff cutter members.
The disadvantage of this is that the components for producing a suitable setting or control signal have to have a considerable sensitivity since the spatial distance from the position at which metal parts carried along are apprehended or indicated to the chaff cutters is only very short. This leads to elaborate electromechanical circuits.
It is an object of the invention to provide a machine having a device for detecting and locating metal parts or other foreign bodies in which the structural and circuitry structure may be kept small.
According to the present invention there is provided a machine for processing harvested material having a device for picking-up the harvested material which has been deposited on the ground, a screw conveyor which gathers the material harvested into a swathe of lesser width, feed means, a chaff cutting or other processing device and a device for detecting foreign bodies contained in the harvested material by means of an adjusting or control signal which interrupts the advance of the harvested material to the chaff cutting members, characterised by the feature that the device for picking-up the harvested material has a surface-shaped conveyor means connected in series therewith for conveying material in the same direction and that a sensor element is located on a side of the conveyor means remote or averted from the flow of harvested material and acts over the width extension of the conveyor means for detecting metal and/or other foreign bodies.
Preferably the conveyor means forming a part in the intake region is a revolving conveyor belt and the sensor is preferably located in the region defined by the runs thereof. Preferably also the sensor element acts to cause the screw conveyor of a chaff cutter or the draw in and feed members to be disengaged and/or deenergized.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a substantially simplified schematic sectional view, partly in side elevation of the feeding and processing region of a chaff cutter.
A chaff cutter 1 is substantially comprised of a basic machine 2 with feed and conveying means 3 or 4 and a chaff cutting member 5 and an attachment device 6 connected in front of the basic machine 2.
In the embodiment shown, the attachment device 6 comprises a pick-up device 7 which, for example, picks up from the ground the harvested crops 8 deposited in swathes and supplies it to a screw conveyor 9. The screw conveyor 9 essentially has the function of bringing together the flow of harvested crops of relatively great width towards the centre, for which purpose the screw conveyor 9 has screw convolutions (not shown in detail), which operate towards the machine centre -- thus having opposing pitches.
The pick-up device 7 is partially covered at the top by a scraper plate 10 which is adjoined by a revolving conveyor belt 11. The conveyor belt 11 has substantially the same width as the pick-up device 7. A platform 1 2 is located adjacent to the conveyor belt 11 and is located below the screw conveyor 9.
The flow of harvested crop gathered by the screw conveyor is supplied centrally to the drawin or feed means 3. The feed means 3 comprise a lower and upper roller 13, 14. After the harvested crops have passed these rollers they are supplied by conveying means 4 which are individually comprised of a lower axially fixed rotatable roller 1 5 and an upper pivotally mounted roller 1 6. This pair of rollers serves for the preliminary pressing of the harvested crop, which is then supplied to the chaff cutting members 5. The chaff cutting members 5 are comprised of a revolving drum fitted with blades and a fixed cutting edge backing as is well known to experts who will be conversant with these components and it is thus considered there is no need for detailed description thereof.
In the region of the revolving conveyor belt 11 which is located directly below the flow of harvested crops prior to where the latter is gathered together towards the centre by the screw conveyor, there is at least one sensor 1 7 for locating or detecting metal parts which have possibly been picked up together with the harvested crops by the pick-up device 7. This sensor 1 7 may, for example, be formed by a current carrying coil, a permanent magnet with set-in inducation loop, a capacitive approach initiator or sensor, an ultrasonic sound source and detector or the like sensing component. By means of the above-listed elements, as soon as a metal part is carried along with the flow of harvested material an adjusting or control signal may be produced. This signal is employed to actuate an adjusting or regulating member 18, by means of which the advance of the harvested material towards the cutting members 5 is interrupted. In the embodiment shown, the member 18 comprises a cylinder having a connecting rod which is connected to a rocker arm 1 9. The upper
rollers 14 and 1 6 of the feed or preliminary
pressing means are arranged on the rocker arm 19. If these rollers are disengaged by being lifted out, the feed of the harvested material towards the chaff cutting members 5 is interrupted. It is also possible in the same manner to interrupt the feed of the harvested material in that the screw conveyor 9 is immediately disengaged on detecting a metal part. The feed of the material harvested is also then interrupted. The spatial arrangement of the sensor element 1 7 in the region of the conveyor belt 11 more especially has the essential advantage that metal parts carried along with the material harvested are apprehended at a point at which the thickness of the layer of harvested material is slight. A relatively large distance is also available for producing a control signal. Finally, there are various possibilities for interrupting the feed of the harvested material which may be used depending upon the structural conditions.
