Abstract
203,714. Duclaux, J. Sept. 11, 1922, [Convention date]. Single coatings. -Filtering-membranes are formed on a strip of cloth which is guided by rollers so as to dip first into a solution of cellulose ester and then into a coagulating liquid. The cloth passing from a roll a to a roll g is caused by rollers c, d, e to pass through a trough b containing a solution of nitro-cellulose or other cellulose ester and a vat f containing water or other coagulating liquid. The speed of travel is such that the film of collodion is solidified before reaching the roller d. To prevent adhesion the roller d may be covered with porous material, such as cloth or blotting paper, impregnated with the coagulating liquid. More than one vat f may be used. To cover the solvent of the cellulose ester, vapours given off during the passage of the cloth between the trough b and roller d may be collected in a casing which may surround this part of the apparatus. Some solvent may also be recovered from the coagulating liquid. Variations in the texture or thickness of the membrane formed may be rendered visible by adding colouring matter to the liquid in the vat f. Before receiving the collodion the cloth may be moistened with water or a solution which will modify the filtering properties of the film afterwards formed. Instead of using the trough b a jet or film of collodion may be projected from a nozzle on to the cloth on one or both sides thereof.
