Seat and sofa adjustments. - In stuffed-over upholstered chairs, settees and similar furniture provided with adjustable backs, ends or like parts held in adjusted position by pins engaging apertured plates carried by the fixed and adjustable parts, spaces are formed in the upholstering for the free passage of the movable adjusting device. In the construction described, a chair back a is pivoted at a<1> and is adjusted by curved plates b with apertures b<1> which slide in guides c with apertures c' and are held in the required position by pins h engaging registering apertures b<1>, c<1>, Webbing k is attached to the side rails e to provide a clear space for the movement of the plates b. An outside plate l with holes corresponding in position with the holes c<1> may be secured outside the upholstering to indicate the position of the latter, and when the pins are entirely removable they may be attached to the chair by a flexible connection m. In a modification, the plates b<3> may be pivoted and the connection with the guides c provided by a pin at a fixed point. In this arrangement, the plates b<3> may have a continuous slot b<5> with enlargements b<4> and the pin h may have an enlargement h<1> adapted to engage the notches b' in the locking position, and to be withdrawn into a recess h<2> in the guides to break the connection. Complete withdrawal of the pin is prevented by a plate j.
