Abstract

A cartridge heater comprising a resistive heating element 12, Fig. 1, embedded in ceramic material 16 within a metal sheath 10, is characterised by a tube 14 also embedded in the ceramic material whereby a thermocouple 26 may be removably housed. As described the heater is for low voltage, the connections to it, 22, 24, being via the inner tube and the outer sheath The inner cylinder may be open at its lower end (Fig. 2, not shown) so that the thermocouple can protrude from the tip. The cartridge is manufactured by assembling the parts and then compressing the sheath in order to compact the ceramic. The cartridge may be used (Fig. 3, not shown) to heat and to measure the temperature of the nozzle of a plastics injection mould. <IMAGE>
