Abstract

Three passages 4, 5, 6 lead to a turbulence chamber 3 to produce swirling of the fuel-air mixture in the chamber during compression. The passages 4, 5, 6 may be V or U shaped in cross-section, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown). The chamber 3 may be formed in the cylinder head or defined between the head and the piston 1. A plurality of chambers 3 may have respective swirl producing passages with a spark plug 27 associated with each chamber. The piston head may include a projection (18), Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), in which the chamber and passages are partly defined. <IMAGE>
